So as in the title I was wondering if anyone knows of a simple (and free) way to transfer my whatsapp chats from Android device to iPhone?

On Android, whatsapp backs up to Google Drive and there is no way on iPhone to restore from this back up. There seems to be a lot of software out there which you need to pay for so was hoping there is a free way before I have to spend more cash?

Please if you know of a way that would be great.

Unfortunately, there is no way to do it free and the software that says it can is also not a guarantee.

WhatsApp removed the Google Drive backup option in ios ages ago.

Best bet is to backup your chats and save manually if its really important. You will still be a member of the groups you are in so no problem there. Just all media and previous chats will be gone.

Wow, this is a problem that should not exist. Probably exists as a way to try and discourage people from changing to iOS

That's one of the reasons why some of us use Telegram. Not only do you not need to do any backups (all cloud based), but you can open Telegram on any connected device (phone, tablet, computer) and everything is just there.

Exactly the same as moving from IOS to Android or even from Windows 10 Mobile to Android (as I did over a year ago).

It really is ridiculous that Whatsapp does not allow the moving of chats between the various mobile OS.

I've never done this, but couldn't one export the local WhatsApp backup stored on the phone, transfer to the new phone and restore. I know local backup exists but not sure on the restore

Probably different file structure too.

Well every time I've reset my phone to factory defaults, my chats have been restored from Google Drive.

EDIT: Saw a post now about WA for iOS using iCloud.

I recently made a switch from Android to iOS (from Galaxy S9 to iPhone 11 Pro Max) so I guess I can provide some insight about the whole thing works. There is not native way to transfer WhatsApp from Android to iPhone. Google mostly shows results of websites offering paid tools.

I found this tutorial where they have mentioned about a open-source software (free) that can transfer WhatsApp messages from Android to iPhone: https://www.iphone-to-pc.com/transfer-whatsapp-chat-messages-from-android-to-iphone.html (check method number 2). Now the catch is that it is only available for the Mac users, and looks pretty complicated to use if you are not familiar with X Code and all. Here is the link to the open-source project they are referring to: https://github.com/residentsummer/watoi

Currently, I don't have Mac so I couldn't try it. I end up using the software they mentioned in the method 1 of this same tutorial (https://www.iphone-to-pc.com/transfer-whatsapp-chat-messages-from-android-to-iphone.html). It did transfer my 10000+ messages and media (some media files on my iPhone looks blurry) to my new iPhone. Not free but still the cheapest option out there. Hope this will help those looking to transfer their whatsapp chats from android to iPhone!

I now this is a while back, but now I am in the same boat. Stuck with a mass load of important whatsapp messages that i cant seem to transfer from my android to iphone.

Shouldnt be a problem.
I did a Whatsapp backup into the cloud on my iphone a few months ago
Then did a Restore on my new Android phone

At least I think thats what i did, I was pretty wasted at the time

Damn, 6 April since the announcement for working on cross-platform backups and it's still not ready :(

It looks like this functionality could be released soon
Screenshots shared by WABetaInfo show a new “Move chats to Android” option in WhatsApp’s iOS app. So far, most of the evidence has pointed towards an iOS to Android transfer feature, but WABetaInfo has previously reported that the opposite will also be possible.

I need to do this, helping with a new iPhone setup
Any advice? I'll probably use drfone software to do it, seems to be the 'safest' option

It's honestly difficult to trust much headway will be made regarding WhatsApp. The multi device update has mostly been a let down. WhatsApp development also moved at a glacial pace.
