Hi everyone,

So, I'm moving house next week Friday and want to take my Telkom line with. I phoned them over the weekend and they put the transfer in for me. I think they said it will only start from next friday and could take 21 days to complete.

First question, is it worth just telling them I've already moved (we have taken the new property from the 1st but only move later this month) to speed up the process?

Second (and the bigger issue)...

I dont see any phonejacks. Its a townhouse in a complex so hopefully Telkom has routed wires there. Whats involved in getting a new line installed? We looked around the place today for potential phonejacks, all we could find were a few plain white wall sockets. Ie, like the thing you would stick a plug only it was featureless and blank. One of them was narrow, sort of half the width of a regular wall socket and in the place where you might expect to find a phone. If we pried the cover off, what would we see underneath?

Next question - how do we get the cover off? Screwdriver?

Thanks in advance.

Big Warning Signs are flickering here....

Do you know if the previous tenant and/or neighbours have Telkom lines?

No idea. But it doesnt look like the previous tenant had a Telkom line since there are no jacks. As mentioned I see places where jack might be installed, but I'm not sure what would be involved in actually doing that.

Go here: http://www.telkom.co.za/minisites/utilities
Click to select your province/region
Download/open the spreadsheet
Filter on your exchange area / suburb
Phone the name / number
Query whether there is Telkom infrastructure in your complex.

Office hours only.

EDIT - be nice, it not realllllly their job to search for that info, but they can get it!

As an alternative, sign up with a VOIP provider (e.g. Neotel, Clearvoice) and port your old telkom number to your VOIP line.

the body-corp should have more information. best of luck because complexes and telkom have quite a history. sometimes the body-corp outright refuses any access to them.
btw, a copper pair should be behind those blank panels, but i've seen a few where it's just an empty pipe without a draw-line

Not keen on a VOIP provider since we need ADSL. Will try to pry off the cover and see what is there. And get hold of the body corporate. The estate agent already tells me they are useless. Luckily we are renting and not buying!

Okay I have an idea, can someone tell me if I'm being an idiot or not.

So, the idea is to cancel the transfer, and get Telkom to install a new line in the new house. Then, on the 17th, I cancel the old line.

Benefits: They can start the new line process NOW, without cutting off my old line, and I'll be billed from whenever the new line is operational (which most likely wont be before the next week or two or even new years).

Drawbacks: I dont keep the old home phone number. Not much of a loss IMHO.

Thoughts?

I dont know. But I presume I would be liable for installation costs even if I transferred the line because there is no jack in the house. So I dont think there will be much of a difference.
