Transmission Fluid

I've also experienced something similar in my fiesta. I changed the clutch, changed gear oil and selecting gears in the morning was as tough as counting how many hair strands I have, but it would get better when the car warms up.

Initially I thought I needed to bleed the clutch system but I could find the cylinder anywhere.
I went to Ford bought their gear oil, that didn't make a big difference until one day I changed my front brake pads and bled the system, from then on my gears would just slide through, turns out MK7 fiesta's use the same line as the brake cylinder (or so I think)

OP, maybe change the whole clutch system, the gear oil, do a bleed and see if that makes any difference.
Mhh, good observation, the Corolla in question uses the same brake fluid bottle for both the clutch and brakes.

We'll be changing the gear oil and perhaps bleeding the brakes for good measure, I am reluctant in advising on changing the more expensive items like the clutch, thinking of leaving that for last, when everything has been eliminated.

I did notice the clutch does have a high bite point though, it's an old car and the clutch could possibly be on its way out. The car still pulls like a train though when the gears are working so I am more inclined towards the fault being related to the gearbox and its associated components.

Sometimes and only sometimes( and do this at your own risk!) you can squeeze a bit more life out of a manual box by running it on some ATF.
It is , according to some of the gearbox guys, better for the brass and the bearings and help smooth the changes.

In the truck boxes I do, I run them on a 50/50 mix of EP90 and ATF which they seem to like, the 90 for the "stickyness" and the ATF for the lubrication in difficult to get to spots. Bear in mind though these boxes are completely different animals to car ones, they have oil pumps etc. and have to handle different loads.

But if the clutch take up point is so high I think you are on the right track with what you propose trying, before throwing money in the wrong places.

you're better off just leaving it well alone if it's old :)

 :) Don't fix it if it is not broken?

Indeed I just left my bmw as is with 200k on the original oil, no its someone else problem lol

In a auto box if the oil is still bright pink and does not smell burned it is generally still good. Just check it in the correct way and top up if needed, being careful not to overfill.
