I brought the US into this to illustrate the fact that even with proper maintenance, incidents like this do happen. I'm waiting to find out what the investigation findings are before I blame maintenace.

I've been to one of the pump stations in eMalahleni. At the time, the department was understaffed and in dire state from maintenance point of view. Without any report, I could clearly see there was no preventative work of any sort.

Derailments are rarely reported to the police. I think police are only called if they need police to secure the area or there's loss of life.
