I'm an Mweb ADSL user. Last week my access to www.hotmail.com, www.mweb.co.za & www.mg.co.za suddenly stopped. After days of phone calls to the help desk, someone told me to change the proxy server to dsl-cache.saix.net. The reason given was that the URL of the "transparent proxy server" serving me was being rejected by the web pages I was trying to access.
This fixed the local problem, but not hotmail. I'm still baffled about what happened to cause all this and how it can be that the URL of a server used by MWeb to provide my service could be rejected by its own home page. To judge from the recorded message on the help desk number over the weekend, there were service problems country-wide. Being a suspicious kind of guy, I wonder if Telkom had some part in all this lot?
If nothing else, I'd really appreciate the address of a website that might explain some of the technical detail. I've asked Mweb, but so far their explanations have not been too helpful.
