Hey guys!

I'm starting my new job on Tuesday and I'd like to hear opinions on the transport solution I've formulated.

I live in Kempton, work in Sandton.
I'm planning on catching the Gautrain from Rhodesfield Station(Parking my car at Rhodesfield station) to the Sandton Station then taking the bus to/from my desired drop off/pick up point.

With the 35 day pass, I'll pay:
- R1021 for my monthly train usage.
- R15*22days = R330 parking.
- R12*22days = R264 bus usage.

So is it safe to assume my Gautrain fee is going to be +/-1615?
Are there any things I'm missing or that I've left out?

Also, to be at work at 8am, what time should I get on the bus at Sandton Station? (My drop off point is cnr Pongola and Katherine rds)

Thanks guys!

You forgot to factor in fuel and wear and tear on your vehicle getting to and from the Rhodesfield station.
That, the longer commuting times and the parking fees are the deal break for me.

I live 8.4km from Rhodesfield station. Which equates to approximately 1 tank of fuel needed to get to work.

My car is heavy on juice, it'll cost me an extra grand a month if I drive to work.
Will the commute really be longer if I roll on the Gautrain?

It depends on your traffic situation but the two times I used the Gautrain I waited about 10 minutes for a train and another 10 minutes for a bus.
Combined with having to drive to the station it easily doubled my commute time (45 minutes using only a car vs 1:15 to 1:30 using car+train+bus),

Find a job closer to home. Life is much to precious to waste it on a commute.

And let my Opel run into disrepair because I can't afford to perform pre-emptive maintenance??

My salary has more than tripled at this new job, thank you very much!

I used to live in Cape Town southern suburbs and travelled for 3 hours a day to and from work in the CBD. I bought a flat directly opposite from where I live.

If you factor in the time and cost then it certainly is something to consider in terms of moving closer to work.

As for your car, I drive an Opel superboss with a huge turbo attached to the engine. I drive it maybe once a month and thats for pleasure and I haven't had any issues, I have four other cars as well parked in storage that from time to time I enjoy.

Yes Saturnz, I know about you and your Superbosses. ;)

Moving is not a viable option at this time. I need to build some financial stability before I'll consider that. Besides, Its cheaper staying where I am now than moving to Sandton. Fuel included.

yes if you looking at it in terms of simple cash flow then yes

but when you factor in time then things sort of changes, for example, I value my time at R150/hour outside of work hours. So when I'm sitting in traffic for 3 hours thats R450 a day gone.

Here's an interesting thought. If your commute to work takes about an hour and a half and getting back home is another ninety minutes you are effectively loosing one full month per year.

Take a look at a calendar and imagine loosing a month... Not worth it.

Worth it for now.

as I said, three hours a day down the drain, the sad thing is you only appreciate the value of time as you get older, so choices you make now that discount the value of time eventually catches up with you down the line when you start wondering where all your free time has gone

If you enjoy driving/travelling 3 hrs a day, then it is not a waste. A friend of mine loves driving everyday. He doesn't mind it at all.
