Every couple of days a Metro officer sits in his private vehicle near my shop with a camera inside his vehicle and seems to be trapping people.
I suppose they could be an unmarked police vehicles (he uses two different ones).
He doesn't pull people over and issue fines so I would assume people get the fine in the mail.

My counter sales lady has phoned JMPD and complained and they said that if that's what he is doing they will stop it, but still he keeps appearing.

Could he be doing anything else other than trapping?

It is legal to trap in unmarked vehicles. As long as there's a trapping sign a certain distance before him indicating that it's a trapping zone, he can do it from wherever, whenever, and no further indication need be given as to whether trapping is currently taking place.

Most of those camera-dudes I have seen lately are nowhere NEAR a camera sign.

Infact the one sits nothing less than 3km from the nearest speed sign. There's no camera pic on that sign...

They hide in the trees. By now people have learnt that they're there.

That is how I have it as well.

If there is a speedtrap sign up, they can take your photograph and send you the fine in the mail. If the sign is not there they are not allowed to trap with a camera. They are however allowed to trap you (at any place), and then stop you and give the fine there and then.

I doubt that a camera inside a car would be in compliance with the regulations. A far as I recall the camera has to be firmly mounted and set up. In a vehicle it would move.

Well beware on Olifantsfontein road, just 150m past Teazers, Pitzer St - they are there daily! And also just past RMM hardware store, daily there also! 60km zone, so enough victims!

Most main roads warn you of camera trapping these days, so they can do what they want. Marked or unmarked. If you don't speed, you won't get caught

As far as i know a camera must have fixed base to operate from, not in a car, dont know if the law has changed, I HIGHLY DOUBT IT. The camera position is calibrated and issued with a calibration certificate, which the plonker must have on site, or be able to reasonably provide. So in a unmarked car? NO f%^^&^ing is that legal

There is no sign anywhere on this road, and I'm sure its not legal to trap from inside the vehicle.

Thats what I'm thinking..

So what I'm thinking is that maybe I should take a couple of photo's of this guy with my slr and post them somewhere.. or send them to CB.

Ofcourse, the onus is on you to waste your time and money while if you don't, you pay. Guilty until proven innocent.

They are allowed to trap from an unmarked car. They must have the tripod on the ground and with a calibration certificate as you say. The camera is not allowed to be setup in or on the vehicle.
