Hi,

Currently don't get paid an allowance on my income. Money gets given to me by book-keeper mid-month for last month and portion of this month's petrol expenditure.

Now I ask book-keeper to add it to salary and she says my salary will be taxed by an extra 50%.

No I drive 1000km a month.

This worth a fight with them?

Mungo says no

/edit But yes, having your travel allowance added onto your salary puts you in a different tax bracket potentially, not by 50% though, so the book keeper is lying.

You can deduct travel allowance off your tax each year, need to keep log books and such, and then get a portion back from SARS. Your company pays in cash it seems, so that doesn't look like it goes through SARS at all

I guess you want to prove that you earn more by having them add it to your salary? If that is the case, it's just not worth it. You're going to pay additional tax and if your next potential employer wants you to prove that you earn a travel allowance you can just show them your bank statements (assuming they pay the money into your bank account).
