I currently have a HTC TyTN II, which is great for internet access while I'm travelling except that the screen is rather small when it comes to things like finding directions via google maps.

So I'm considering getting something else to use for internet while travelling. I have a laptop, but I don't really want to carry it with me whenever I travel - plus it's a bit big to look up maps on the go :) I thought of something like the HTC Advantage, but they're horribly expensive; then I thought of a netbook, but the cheapest I can find is around R3500, which is more than I really want to spend (considering that I have a laptop for normal home use). Then I saw a PSP at Game and wondered, could that work? or maybe DS Lite? Are the screens on those more usable than a 2.8" cellphone screen? And what's the browsing like, is it usable enough?

The most versatile option is probably the netbook, but at the moment I'd rather have something cheaper and more limited (the iPad is probably exactly what I want, except for the cost!) Or is there a whole class of gadget out there that I'm not considering?

Try to get an iPhone for less than 3 grand - or thereabouts - I got an iPhone 2G for R1700 it's awesome. The web browser is excellent as well as the maps application. A 3GS is even better since it's faster with more RAM.

The DS and PSP are not good for internet on the go IMO. They don't have a built in modem or a good browser - they're really for gaming primarily.

Otherwise, look around for a cheap netbook in classifieds etc. Some people are selling their old Acer Aspire One's for under 2 grand ...

But is an iPhone screen much bigger than the TyTN II? I see the iPod Touch has built-in wifi, but the screen is only 3.5", which isn't much better than the 2.8" I have already.

Yeah, I think I'm going to have to check out the 2nd hand netbook market... an aspire aspire one a110 would be perfect for what I need.

Yeah the iPod Touch/iPhone has a great screen. It's a lot better than 2.8".

What's also important is the software. It has the best mobile web browser, really fast and user friendly.

But yeah, you can definitely get a nice netbook, if I see any good deals I'll let you know.
