Hi All,

Just a quick question.

What is the best way to travel?

I have heard both arguments for credit card and travel card issues by FNB.

I am leaning towards travel card by FNB as there are less fees involved?

Can anyone tell me which is the best out of personal experience?

Credit card is best.

However just be aware that FNB really nails you on the exchange rate. But I guess that they all do.
 
When I travel I usually get both my Nedbank debit card and Virgin Credit cards unblocked for the country that I will be in. I usually use my virgin card as their fees are quite low (IIRC) and only use my Nedbank card for backup.
 
I called FNB this morning and they said that there are a few fees, ie. increased Exchange rate + commission+ percentage of purchase. if you use a FNB tracel card, for every R10k used, there is a R120 fee.
 
Small amount of cash in currency of destination. Then Credit Card all the way. Preferably have two. I have VISA and Mastercard. Sometimes there is a problem with a card and a reserve is a good idea.

Having said that I will not pay a premium to uses a CC. There are places in UK that penalise CC users with an extra charge.
 
Cheque Card and Credit Card. With FNB, there are zero charges as well
 
I personally always use the CC, draw money at ATM, pay at speed-points etc. As for the fees, I bite the bullet and treat that as an expense for the trip.
 
PEP sells these prepaid VISA cards for like R9.99. You then add funds as you wish. I wonder if it can be used internationally? :whistle:
 
CC or these cash passport cards both work.

I used a cash passport card on a trip to the US it was accepted everywhere BUT they cannot put a hold like on a normal credit card. Some car rental companies and hotels put a hold on for a deposit. So they do have limitations nice thing is you can pre-load the card and know how much you will spend.

Sorry to add the cash passport also changes the currency to USD/GPB/whatever at the start so you get the rate when you load it. You then know the dollar/pound amount you have available and there is no conversion cost for each transaction.
