Hi all,

I once heard that there are companies out there, who will remove trees from your property for free if they can keep them, or they buy them from you. Obviously this would be for large or desired trees, and not basically clearing up that dark corner of your yard that you are too afraid to get to.

I recently bought a house and I have a few smallish palms and 4 large Yuccas (2-2.5 meter high) that I would like removed. Now before I go Texas chainsaw massacre on them(or have to pay someone to do this), do any of you know of a place that offers this service? Either remove them for free, or actually buy the trees from your garden?

I an in Cape Town, northern suburbs.

Thanks

Phone Lyndon Collins. They will remove for free, as far as I remember. If the trees are too big you will need to hire the equipment. They then sell for a cr#p.

I haven't found one in Cape Town. The lowest price came from a guy in Hout Bay, Kurt de Beer. He also cut the smaller branches up for me and I have firewood for 2-3 years, plus gave 10 wheel-barrow loads to my neighbour

Oh yeah, that guy wants it for furniture making and some others want it for firewood... then it was no problem...

The thing is, I have palm trees, 2 small ones, and 4 Yuccas... they're pretty much decorative trees :)

Thanks for the help so far. :)

Decorative stuff you say?

Then nobody will want to come and take them from your garden.. hack them down if you don't want them anymore.

Meh, thought as much... Just a pain to do so....

Got a guy who might buy it and come and uproot it and remove it, for no cost either way... may be the best.

Did OP manage to get someone to buy those trees from him/her?

I have 2 tall pine trees and 4 smaller trees that look like pine trees as well.

OP did not... I ended up cutting them down to ground level and drove the cuttings to the dump. Then about 2 years later, I had lots more trees removed by a treefeller and he removed all the roots of those trees as well.

How much does a treefeller usually charge? My 2 trees are extremely tall.

I had a guy that removed 10 trees (+-5 meters high each) and their roots, and trimmed another 9 trees, for R3000. This was half of the other quotes that I got.

I am looking to sell or get them away for free as the treefeller will benefit in the end. A bit low on cash atm but will see how far i get with quotes.

The thing I found is that moving a large pine tree WILL cost more in the end than just buying a new one. Hence people don;t do the free thing anymore, unless it's like braaiwood or furniture wood, then removal will be free.

Unless they're rare.. nobody will want to buy them...

And a treefeller is in the business of cutting things down, not trading in trees.

Holy cwap. I just paid R4450 for two Wild Strelitzia's to be removed (although the one was getting monstrous) and two and a bit palm trees to be pruned.

On a side note, the two palm trees I had pruned are common riff-raff; but the "bit" palm tree I have on my property is worth money apparently - except it is in a place that you cannot retrieve it from without basically breaking down a few walls and hiring a crane. Did make sure the tree-felling dude gave me a lot of seeds from the palm tree that is ostensibly worth money. Now to try and grow them....
