Are any of these better than the other?

These seem to be the brands that people mention when it comes to tripods.

I have R1,200.00 eBucks and want to get something from either Kalahari or Makro (I think those are my two choices?)

What sort of Vanguard or Manfrotto are you hoping to get for R1200? Hähnel might be a better bet in that price range.

BTW - tripods are for sissies. :p

I bought a Manfrotto MT294A3 tripod with a 496RC2 ball head kit from Orms for R1195.

And with the center column inverted it works well for macro photography :)

I have the same tripod, use mine with a JOBY Ballhead, never thought of inverting the centre column :)

I have got a Vanguard Alta (not sure of the model, but it is CF) with a Vanguard ball head (also not sure of the model) and am very happy with it... price was quite a bit higher though, and it was imported from the USA...

DAMN that is cheap!! The prices have come down a lot! Feeling sorry for buying my Hahnel triad for R999 a while back

OH and I need an FNB account, all these eBucks threads area starting to annoy me... Is 1 eBuck = 10c?

Yea - cept they do them in Rand increments ... so 10 = R1.00

And they add up quickly ;) In April I bought a 28mm 2.8 with them and I'm ready for my next purchase. I get an average of about R1,000.00 a year worth

It doesn't need to be the most robust or anything - I just want it steady when taking long exposures.

Correct.

Personally, I love the fact that I can accumulate eBucks for normal use of my debit, credit and fuel cards. It's a great rewards programme, me thinks.

I am with ABSA rewards. They offer RBucks (real bucks).
I accumulated R1200 this year and I can spend them anywhere.

Sorry to go off topic, FYI ;)

Watch your eBucks pile up by earning 1% back when you spend on your credit card.

Not only will you earn up to 0.8% back on your FNB Visa Personal Cheque Card purchases

Earn 0.75% back on purchases when you shop at Makro

Earn 1% back when you shop at Incredible Connection

Earn 1% back when you shop at Hi-Fi Corp

Earn 4% back when you shop at Look & Listen

There are other ways, but for me, these would be the ones that apply to me.

EDIT : Checked out the ABSA rewards and the thing I didn't like, was that earning is only at certain partners - whereas the FNB ebucks is all purchase on the credit card. I can go to Steers, the Keg or pay for my tyres and it adds,

I don't think that's as sturdy as the Manfrotto .... I can't find info on it, but *think* that's the one I tried yesterday and I got the feeling it it wouldn't do 1KG+ with easy.

I tried another one earlier than was sturdy and held up to 5GB ... but it was R2,000 :/

I actually had a rather large, sturdy tripod that my dad bought about 20 years back for his video camera ... was very sturdy.

At the same time, I had a table top (larger than the Manfrotto - but smaller than all the others) ... and I used the table top everywhere. I could place it on walls, car roof or anything to still get the shot - but without needing to lug around the large one.

When I bough the 7D I gave it to my brother not realising I'd have an issue getting another. I'm going to use my 28mm most the time on it - so that's only 1.1KG in total then
