hello all

so friday i was driving and next minute my gearbox like skipped a beat or something and just lost like grip

i had to pull off to the side and get towed home

so the car goes into gears so thats why i assume not the clutch

but once you in 1st you leave the clutch the gearbox makes a heavy grinding winding noise and the van doesnt move

what can this be

also any idea on costs ?

The fact that it makes a grinding sound can't be good. Normally if the clutch goes, you can select a gear but letting go of the clutch the vehicle won't move. Depending on the type of sound it's making, shudder vs grinding it might just be a thrust bearing. But actual metal on metal grinding... oof.

If the gears got messed up, it's proably best to just get a secondhand one from a scrapyard.

However, you will only know once someone has had a look at it. Best to have a gearbox specialist look at it first. (Not a mechanic, a gearbox specialist!)

yeah thats what i think im going to try to do ...

cos i called a transmission place now and they said could be clutch

and its basically doing that where letting go the van doesnt move but yes has a heavy like grinding noise

Did it give any warning? Having issues going into second and the likes?

nothing

no warnings

i did hear a slight humming noise before but they said its nothing to worry about

i was going up a hill and just held my foot on the accelerator
Yea, I took lean towards a busted clutch or thrust bearing. Thrust bearing is part of the replacement clutch kit anyway. So a clutch replacement should sort it. I hope that is all it is :) Good luck!

i hope its just that

cause a guy just quoted me now like R40k if its the clutch and gearbox

a clutch is around 10k

R10k?

That is robbery mate!

It's a rear-wheel drive. Buy the kit and do it yourself. Not a fk'ng chance! Clutch kit will probably be around R2k depending on the brand. With it being rear-wheel drive it's extremely easy to remove. I would not pay R10, not a chance!

Instead of replacing the clutch, rather sign up for a course in punctuation.

its a 4*4

they say the tritons comes with dual mass fly hweel or something like that

will have a look what the guys say 1st

thanks bud
100%

Honestly replacing a clutch is not science. Main problem is the access to the actual gearbox and dropping it to have access to the flywheel and the clutch. Rear-wheel drive vehicles it's extremely easy. I honestly hope it's not too much of an expense, damn cars man...
