I got the idea from Kloon to make my own PABX using a couple of Fxo/fxs cards and Trixbox.
I had an old pabx I was going to install, but I am quite excited about doing this instead..
I am downloading Trixbox CE from sourceforge.

Does anyone know where I can get some fxo/fxs cards? I think I need two fourport cards with two ports being fxo and 6 being fxs..
What can I expect to pay?

We buy our stuff from Miro, they're Digium resellers. Take a look at both the Digium website for the products you require and contact Miro in Cape Town, Durban or Midrand.

Good luck! It can be frustrating at times when you first start, but you'll have fun doing it, I guarantee! :D

Approximately how much would a system like this cost?

Depends on the number of phone lines you need. Do you have an E1 line or an ordinary analogue line? How many do you need?

The software is free. However, an E1 line, for example, is between R5500-R7500 depending on the reseller. For a 12 line/12 extension analogue->digital line equipment is about R12500. For a 4 line analogue->digital the card is about R3500-R4500.

Hi.

One phone line and about 5 extensions for now (should be able to add on later). Are those prices including the PC?

I have an account with Miro, but only used them for wireless products. I don't really have experience with pabx or voip but would like to learn.

This is what Ive figured...

You need a basic pc...

System req for Trixbox is : "at least a 500MHZ PIII with 256megs of RAM."
So I am going to use a machine from ITV :

GIGABYTE SOCKET 775, 1333FSB, 2xDDR-800, PCI-E SLOT, O/B VGA LAN, 8xSOUND, SATA
INTEL 2.2GHZ DUAL CORE PROCESSOR
TRANSCEND 1GB DDR2 800
SEAGATE 80GB SATA 16MB CASHE 7200RPM HDD
SAMSUNG SATA 22x DVD WRITER BLK
ISONIC CORPORATE CASE 400W W/2xUSB, W/SATA

PRICE

R2286.78 incl

Thats the cheapest I could find, might be able to knock off another couple of hundred because I have a 250 gig lying around here...

Two cards, with 3 fxo and 5 fxs ports at +-R3600 ea incl (4 ports per card)

I'm guessing another R1000 for phones plugs and wiring...

Total : 10278.86 (I think)

Thats a kickass pabx thats voip capable from word go.

"go" being right after I sweat bricks setting it up.
I know a little linux, but I honestly didn't even know what Fxo/Fxs was before earlier this week...

I do like Samsung stuff...
but where's the fun in that?

ok..

So far:

I bought a machine from rectron : R1535 inc (without the HDD)
I had a 250 gig sata
I got the Yeastar TDM800 with two fxo's and two fxs's from scoop. R2935.50 inc
I still have on back order with scoop for thursday : TDM400 with two more fxs cards.
Along will all the wiring , jacks and wall boxes : R2117.55

So far I have spent a total of R6588.05.

All I still have to buy the extention phones.. The system will have 8 but I am only going to use 6 for now. I have a couple of phones lying arround. I am going to see if I can use them..

Now just to set up trixbox...
The yeastar is supported by trixbox, but you have to install drivers...
Time to haul out all those linux howto's....

Installing the drivers was a little more work than I expected.. but its sorted..
now just figuring out all the settings...

There are a HUGE ammount of settings to configure... :D

Yeah, the first time is a bugger. Try get as much documentation as possible and read it thoroughly. The satisfaction can't be replaced, however!

Sheesh...

Here I feel I must plagiarize Douglas Adams in his foreword to Hitchhikers Guide a bit..

I approached this project somewhat akin to how Hamlet aproached murder; With some hesitancy
at first, then growing enthusiasm, then alarm at the enormity of the task ahead..

Lol :D shwew

IT LIVES!!!

I have a fully functional PABX for the grand total of R7300!!!!!!
That includes 4 incoming lines, 8 analogue extensions (using 6), all wiring, wall jacks, phones - the works!

I have a few things to sort out in the morning, but I think I should go live with it by the end of day tomorrow.

The features of the system blow me away. A fully functional IVR system, voicemail via email, user level auditing, full recording of all calls, ect ect..

Not to mention that I can have an extra extension at every computer using a soft phone. I even have a soft phone app on my Iphone (WeePhone SIP for $4.99) that allows me to turn it into an extension via Wifi when I am at the office. I think it could even work via 3g...

I had a bit of trouble installing the Yeastar cards with trixbox and dahdi, but the service from Yeastar was awesome! Within an hour of mailing them I got a MSN address.. within 1/2 an hour the system was sorted.

Now... VOIP. is it worth it in this country? whats the best service provider?

I like the idea of using the analogue lines for incoming calls only and directing all outgoing calls via an ITSP.
