Looking at getting one of these for the wife and myself at home:

Wifey will probably use it more as she is doing the body building thing. I was wondering if anyone here has experience with this or similar all-in-one home gym Smith machine setups?

The build quality of trojan gyms are questionable at best. Maybe they made quality stuff in the past but not so anymore. Best would be to test it out in person somewhere. Personally would spend more for something like below.

In my personal experience those things are terrible

The movements are at weird angles, the machines aren't smooth, there is always something in the way when trying to grip at a natural width etc. etc.

Don't do it. Or at least as others have mentioned, get it 2nd hand at a quarter of the price, and then sell it 4 years later unused for what you paid for it.

IMHO. Get a good quality bench/squat rack combo and some free weights and you are set for life.

agree with whats been said here.
Go look at the second hand market.
I would rather build up a few pieces than get something like this, maybe look at

Rack with movable clips so you can use it for bench, squat and have the bar easily rackable for things like military presses etc
Floor padding so you can do things like deadlift and not worry about weights, plates etc
Bench with incline capability
Free weights
TRX cables
If you can get a cable crossover in budget or save up for one, its gold.

I suggest you use it more

Otherwise your pop will get hot and leave you for someone who klaps it like Paul Mainman

Haha, ja that is always a risk but as long as I keep up my calastenics and martial arts I think I'll be ok. I get SO bored pushing weights around...respect to those who can focus like that!

Ah that's cool then. You will klap Paul silly

Trojan sucks. I have a home gym but one of the cables snapped and I haven't been able to find a replacement since then. Trojan said they can replace the cable but I haven't heard back from them in ages so I just gave up.

What is a "cable crossover"?

A mate has a gym like this...also hassles with the cables...couldnt get one...Wound up going to Cable Man and having one made up...

I bought an old Trojan Power Cage & about 30 weight plates from some random Junkmail dude for R2.5 grand a few years ago, still does me just fine..

Only thing is I moved it from a spare bedroom to a more open space last weekend, by myself.
The thing weighs a bloody ton, even disassembled into manageable chunks I was sweating like a pig.

This one.. I still consider it a bargain.

I have a old Trojan bench, which I bought second hand in 2005 with a trojan dumbbell set. Works well. I would not purchase anything more complex than that from Trojan, as their build quality is more on the cheaper side of things. The plus side of my bench, is that it is bolted together (very few welds) which allowed me to easily transport it over the years. Need to dust it off again as I need start getting back exercising.

DO you have to buy the weights separately?

Yup, which has me already doubting. If you see the makro link in my OP, there is one review where the guy speaks about that. Need to add a couple of grand for olympic size disks...already that is enough to make me shop around.

Looked at cable sites but these days I'm just using weights, a bench and bike. Will get a custom made cable when I'm in the mood for the gym again.

Looks sturdy...like you got one of the older ones when build quality was a bit better

Jack of all trades master of none - space sucking monstrosity..
Tons of vids and options on YT with budget home gyms.
Free weights also a must have providing many more workout options.

Many are going for the minimalist look incorporating benches, bands, ropes, balls, chains, tyres, bags, straps, wall mounted bars. Possibilities are endless.

Those Trojan thingies are very old school - ugly.
