short version:I bought a fish tank the other day (18L) and i have 8 tropical fish the tank is allready set up i just need tips on how to look after them, teptrature, food.

Scrub clean tank regularly. Make sure there is no soap residual in it after scrub.

Easy on the food. Rather feed 2x and make sure they eat all of it else it rots.

Can't remember temp. Pet shop should have told you.

Get a high quality thermostat & element. Mine went beserk & fried the fish.

Don't tap on the glass.

Get one of those magnetic glass cleaner things.

Hi,

Keep the temperature of the water about a degree or so warmer think its 27 - 28 so as to keep white spot out of your tank.

Don't over feed the buggers rather under feed.

Replace a third of the water every 2nd month.

Use a power head to pull water through the gravel filter system rather than the air stone and tube system.

Filter system that clips onto the back of the tank and sucks up water and then through three filter bags then flows back into the tank like a water fall are worth the money.

looks like this and comes in an assortment of sizes http://www.fosterandsmithaquatics.com/Product/prod_display.cfm?c=3578+20024+14448&pcatid=14448

18 l is a very small tank 220l would have been a better size to start with..

Keeping fish is very therapeutic !!

it's a tropical starter kit,how much do you such a big tank would cost.

P.S i checked with the pet shop and they said the temp should be between 22 and 26c

Get one of those wire frame net jobbies, makes it easier to scoop the dead ones out and flush down the toilet :)

What fish did you get? Don't put any more in that tank it's kinda small. If you get tired of those ones you have in there get some Malawi Chichlids (spl?) and watch the mahem unfold.

i can't remember their names only some of it,2 of them are sharks (something),2 of them are these fish that sit on the glass the whole time,1 is a silver (something),1 is an angelfish, then there are these other 2 the male has the realy colourfull tail and they are very small.sorry for the poor description.

redtail black shark?
plecostamus should be the sucker jobbie ones
silver dollar?
angelfish are cool, those you can keep with Malawi's as they are also cichlids tend to be more agressive.
Guppies sounds like

It really pays to get a booklet on them, some fish you can't mix with others. Plus it'll cover some of the common illnesses/diseases
fin rot, whitspot as Nomad said and there's others.

i think those are the ones, not sure about the last one.

i got this anti-ict thing to cure the white spot.

PS.the sharks keep swimming against the glass,is this normal?

Do they look like this > Guppy
Don't put that stuff in the water it stains the silicone(well it used to not sure if that's changed), rather wipe it on them with cotton wool when you see there's a problem.
Probably normal or they're starving dunno.

almost like that, the female is just plain grey with a seethru tail, the male is the same but his tail is more colourfull and longer.

i put a small pince of fish flakes in the tank each morning but it's almost if they don't even see it,maybe i should get bloodworms for them.

Welcome to the aquarium club... or something.

Pet shop seems a bit low on the temperature - I have my Oscar and Plecostamus in the high 20s.

Have to agree, especially with 8 fish in there. Even a 100l tank would be better.

Sound right.

Enjoy your tropicals. Not really my thing, more into marine/reef setups.

I enjoy other peoples marine tanks, still the best fish and animals to have really amazing colours, now though I'm too lazy to even keep tropicals so there's just a goldfish in a bowl :)

i only think it's 18 l,the tank is 70cm on the front and back and 40cm on the sides,50cm high.i didn't check how many litres i poured in.
