Hello there,

I wonder if there is anyone who can help me please? I have spent many hours trying to install the E220 modem from Vodacom onto my desktop PC.

Firstly Windows XP detects the Huawei modem and a CD ROM. After a short while new CD ROM drive appears in Explorer. The installation software does not auto run but I can access the setup app from the new CD ROM drive.

At this stage no new modem is visible in control panel. Only a mass storage device.

If I manually initiate the installation app, I am shown the license agreement, which I accept then the software installetion progress window appears. After a while the progress bar reaches 13 bars but does not seem to progress beyond that - as if the installation has hung or halted.

If I go to control panel I can see the Vodaphone lite software in the list of apps under 'add/remove programs" so something must have happened but doeasn't complete.

What do i do? Where do I go from here? Aghhhh I am frustrated :-)

I'd really appreciate some advice or links to some online support.

Many thanks

Is your PC's BIOS up to date? do you have Service Pack 2 installed for Windoze heXPee? do you have any CD or DVD software installed that might be interfering with the Huawei E220 USB modem's flash 'CDROM'? - a problem was recently discovered by another forumite that had something called "AnyDVD" installed.

PS: N2B, welcome to MyBroadband :).

Yeah I have SP2 for Wondows. Not sure about the bios though. On track with interfering software, i did disable my antivirus but perhaps i shall look at CD/DVD software. I shall give it a bash. Watch this space :-)

Okay, eventually i got the provider's techy on the line. 38 minutes later we were nowhere. he suggested I find another PC or find a friendly technician to assist in person. Hmmm

Long story short, I uninstalled loads of stuff from my PC which had to do with CD/DVD reading/writing including Roxio 8.

I rebooted and plugged the modem in. After quite a pause XP detected all kinds of hardware (there must have been about 6 to 8 items) including the Huawei modem which it had never detected before. I took this as a promising sign. Nevertheless, it still didn't auto run the setup but i manually initiated that as I could see the setup programs on the modem in Windows Explorer. In Explorer the modem was presented as a CD drive as I mentioned in my initial post.

During installation the progress bar halted as I described in my initial post. However, I went to Control Panel/System/Modems to see if any hardware HAD infact been installed. The Huawei modem was listed under installed modems. Yay!

Still with the installation progress bar "stuck" I took a gamble ( it was now 24hrs after 1st attempting installation) and clicked on PhoneConnectorVMC.exe. This installed the Vodafone Mobile Connect dashbord and icon in the system tray. Looking promising, I tried it out and hey presto! My device was recognised and I could connect.

Not being convinced, i rebooted, reattached the modem, let XP detect it, then it was there again. so all's well that ends well.

The way i eventually conducted the installation - by sheer hunch, makes me wonder if the uninstalling of the CD/DVD writing software was necessary after all. Perhaps that will remain a mystery.

My compliments to the Vodacom techy for his patience and enduring assistance. It must be difficult for them after all each PC is unique in setup so therefore each PC adds another variable to the equasion.

My thanks also to you, my braodband, for your moral support. I hope by sharing my exparience someone elce may benifit.

Best regards

Hi,

Just for interest sake, you could check whether you've got Autoplay enabled.
1. Click Start>Run and type gpedit.msc
2. Goto Computer Configuration>Administrative Templates>System
3. Double-click "Turn off Autoplay" on righthand side.
4. Because of the wording of this option, Enable actually turns Autoplay off.

In your case, this option should be enabled if the USB modem does NOT autoplay. If so, change it to Not configured or disabled.

Comes up with:
Windows cannot find 'gpedit.msc'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the start button, and then click search.

heXPee Home edition is unlikely to include the policy editor by default, whereas heXPee Professional should have it installed by default.

The modem and software works perfectly on XP Home SP1. Try copying the software from the flash-rom drive and installing it manually from the harddrive. I would suggest you uninstall the MC software and reinstall it to iron out any wrinkles that might have occured during the hanging installation.

After you no longer need it you can disable the drive by going to Computer Management -> Disk Management in control panel and right clicking on the drive selecting "change drive letters and paths" and removing the drive letter. You can enable it later if you need it again.

Then go to network connections in control panel and copy the connection created by the MC software to the desktop or wherever you want it to have easy one click connectivity without launching the MC software.
