Trouble with Playing 4k Content.

Code:
ASF/WMV/AVI (Xvid, H.264/AVC)/ MP4/M4v/MOV (H.264, MPEG-4, HEVC)/ MKV (MPEG-2, MPEG-4, H.264, VP8, VP9, HEVC)/TS/TRP/TP/MTS /MPG/MPEG/DAT/VOB/HEVC (Up to 4096x2160p@60p 50Mbps)

Confirmed all the formats the TV can play via USB, if it can play via USB it will play on the Plex app.

No need for extra hardware like a dedicated HTPC, just use the TV itself.

This is the HTPC i have, and am pretty sure it should cope with the decoding, http://www.gigabyte.com/Mini-PcBarebone/GB-BXi5-4570R-rev-10#sp

It's not powerful enough. I have an LG 4K TV as well as well as Plex and Kodi running from a whole lot of computers and I can tell you that you need a very highly spec'd machine to cope with 4K streaming to Plex.

A problem with Plex is that some files will still be transcoded even if you use the direct play setting with a TV that can decode HEVC. Embedded subtitles into an mp4 container is one of the problems.

Plex will leverage available hardware support soon.

Just don't expect the same output quality as a regular software transcode (hw just doesn't allow it).

Was thinking the exact same thing...

People for some reason like to complicated things for themselves.

Well not really chaps, the usb function is more work, i also run kodi and you cant have this on a smart TV. for my main lounge function, the smart tv is actually useless, as i use the htpc for a number of various tasks, music control, browsing etc etc. I also dont want to have to change between mediums the entire time, so by having to use the usb function on the tv would be more of a hack to connect a hard drive to it and not use my server. I am looking for a work around for my current set up, not use a different one.

Read what I said again, everything the TV is capable of playing via USB it will be capable of playing via the Plex app on the TV.

Go on the TV, install the Plex app from the LG store, open Plex and under settings turn direct play on.

That's all you need to do.

What's your CPU usage on your HTPC when you play 4k content?

So just an update,

Went home and checked the 4k Content I have, and realised the majority of the ones I am having problem with is the H265, anything which is H264 plays no problem, so it def has to do with my Haswell processor. Also I am also getting bottle necking on my network as anything over 35gigs is buffering on my local network, which honestly is not ideal, so I am going to have to figure that out, however i am not the greatest when it comes to configuring my network so I will have to google.

And lastly, The plex media app from the windows store, plays much better 4k movies than the player app off the plex website for some reason. They are two different apps with completely different interfaces, so not sure why this one would play streams more efficiently. It even buffers far less than the other app, which means it must receive media files much quicker.

So I have managed to get the 4k working perfectly as long as I am running h264 compression and the files are less than 20gb.

Cheers chaps

So how did it go playing on the Plex smart TV app?

Tried this and it worked but not as well as the windows app, it buffered or didn't play at all on some of the files, I have the same problem sometimes with bigger files on my samsung smart tv in our bedroom which runs the plex onboard app.

Did you force it to direct play because the LG TV has hardware decoding of x265 files and your CPU usage should be almost nothing.

Make sure you're forcing it to direct play.
