Hey there,

Just wanted to know if anyone else has been experiencing the same problem as I have. As of a few hours ago(Monday 13-08) my internet has been experiencing some strange speed fluctuations.

After venting the initial frustrations and calmed myself enough to think clearly again I sought after a better explanation. I quickly logged onto my router and there it was, my Downstream / Upstream (Kbps) was reading 0/0 but I was still able to browse, slowly as you could imagine, but non the less. I then reset my router and the reading was now on 1344/512.

Anyways, what I am getting at is that I reset my router again and the speed had changed again. The upload limit has stayed the same every time though. I am on a 4meg line so as you know the reading should be 4096/512.

Has anyone experienced this? Is there an explanation?

Is telkom up to something again?

Any insight would be much appreciated!

Cheers.

Re-reading your post..... Modem/Router????? When I troubleshoot sync issues I test using a Netgear modem. Practically ive found it to solve problems like this.

If you say you have a telkom sponsored modem then......... the billions are good but the others are not.

hey Peon,

It's a Mega 105WR.

I just took the old one in this afternoon and got a newer revision.

I'm still waiting for telkom to get back to me on my fault log.

The new router is in and for a while(2 hours) it was sitting exactly at half my usual line speed. 2048/512.

Strangely the upstream never seems to drop. Last night it did to mid 400's, but other than then, it has remained the only constant here.

The Downstream has dropped back down to 1376... So it's still very haphazard. :/

The line itself also suffering in terms of dial tone on the handset, and i have changed the handset as well as disconnect the fax machine from the line. Still no change.

Ok 3 things.

1. Determine accurately at what speed has telkom set your line, You might be paying for 4096k but actually at the exchange they set you to 2048.

2. Report here your Line attenuation and Noise margin. Pay attention to the downstream values

3. I purposely dislike Telkom modem/routers. Even brand new ones. Ask a friend or colleague who has a Netgear or Linksys router if you can test it on your line. My one client could not sync at all on her 4mb line. Popped in a DG834GT and it sang like a bird. Another client has the Mega105 and i'm surprised it even switches on. Coincidently it also had to be replaced and is using a second one.

Ok, fist thing, when it comes to Routers and stuff, I'm afraid you are dealing with a bit of a beginner here :(

1. All i know is we are paying for 4096/512 and it has been that way for some time, only since Monday 13th Oct 08 has the line been jumping around as mentioned above. So how exactly can i confirm the line speed that Telkom has us at the exchange?

2. How can i test these values so that i may report them to you accurately? Sorry, i know this is silly of me not to know.

3. I will try, but i do not have immediate access to a different router, so in the mean while, I'm stuck to testing and hoping to return to normal using the Mega 105. But i totally understand your views on these routers, as i think this is probably the 5th or 6th one that I've had to swap out, simply because of sync issues and so on... :/

Thanks for your help Peon! I really appreciate it!

Phone Telkom and ask them to confirm this. The guys on 0800 375 375 can tell you what youre syncing at/

You going to need to login to the ADSL modem/router through your browser and view line stats. You're going to have to figure this one out.

Its the best way to isolate your problem right now.

Its a pleasure!
