So my parents CRT screen finally kicked the bucket, and its been replaced by a Samsung S19B300B.
I plugged in the cable (via RGB, no DVI or other output available on the PC) and I installed the driver that came with it.

Problem is, I cant set the resolution to the recommended 1600x900. All my available options are 1024x768 and other 4:3 resolutions, which leaves text and images looking stretched and unclear. The display adapter is a VIA S3g unichrome pro or something along those lines.
Is there anyway of changing it to 1600x900? Or even any other 16:10 resolution??

Try find the exact Make and model + driver version and post it here.

Methinks old drivers are the culprit...

Will find out and report back in the morning on the exact details.

Either the graphics card's driver isn't installed or it doesn't have enough memory to do 1600x900. Perhaps you also need to go into the BIOS and assign at least 16 or 32MB of RAM to the GPU.
I can't find much about that GPU, except that it comes with laptops that has resolutions of 1280x800 or lower.

Won't work. Even the latest drivers for those chips are very old. Had the same problem recently with a Savage Pro chipset. Ended up installing a second hand FX5200.

That card is ancient. Not even filling up the tank with fresh new paraffin will help, you need to replace it.

If I googled correctly the VIA S3g unichrome pro is a IGP not a card. Op I take it the motherboard only has a AGP slot? Try and see if you can get a second hand AGP card from http://www.carbonite.co.za/

According to these updating the driver should provide higher resolutions:

Try and get the latest driver from here: http://www.via.com.tw/en/support/drivers.jsp

There is no graphics card installed, there used to be one installed back in the day, but it gave in a few years back.
The pc itself is about 8 years old, but it still does what it needs to do for my parents, although it has had more ram installed and a new powers upply installed over the years.
The bios on that thing is pretty basic, not sure if there is even an option to do that, but Ill have a look!

Like I said above, there is no longer a graphics card in there, it is running off what I assume to be some integrated graphics card, although I am not too sure myself what the Via S3G Unichrome pro igp is, but according to device manager it is the display adapter. There is now an empty agp slot on that pc, so Ill have a look through the classifieds see if I can find something, but in the mean time Ill give those drivers a shot!

Will report back soon!

Yes it's a IGP (Integrated graphics processor) not a card.

Doesn't really matter if it's a card or a chip on the motherboard. It's old. It doesn't support modern resolutions. Get a replacement, if you can still find an AGP card somewhere.
