Troubleshooting fbre issues

I have an issue where my fibre connection has been down since friday afternoon - the PON and LOS LEDs show that "The PON terminal is not connected to optical fibers or does not send optical signals."

While I wait for Telkom would it be useful to take the ONT and fibre patch cable to a friend down the road and see if it works there so that I can confirm that there is no issues with the ONT or patch cable?

If I connect my ONT at his premises and there are no issues with the ONT will it connect to the fibre network or are there other issues like authentication that I am unaware of that would prevent this?

At least in the old days of copper ADSL I had a better idea of how the connections worked an I had a spare modem than I could use for troubleshooting.
