Hi Everyone
I hope someone on the forum might be able to help with the problem I'm currently facing.
We have a shared hosting package with Afrihost but are connecting via a WebAfrica capped ADSL account. We had to move to WA for data due to the issues with Afrihost had from mid July as we our RDS connectivity from two remote branches had become unstable. All worked well until about the beginning of this month.
We started noticing periodically email clients (about 25 users with Thunderbird) timeouts to the IMAP and web server. Sometimes for 10min+ at a time. During this time all other Internet connectivity is fine including our RDS sessions.
Doing a trace route to the server shows total packet loss during these times. Using PaPing on ports 25, 80, 110, 143, 587, 993 also timeouts.
Here is the PingPlot (10sec intervals) for this morning running on one of the server's RDS sessions. The packet loss on the first few hops occurred when the ADSL router was rebooted.
From the traces it would naturally seem that the fault lies with the IS network / Afrihost as packets are mostly dropped on the last 3 hops and occasionally from hop 10 onward. In the last week of monitoring I have not had a single packet dropped on the WA network side.
To complicate matters I have been doing a parallel test on my home PC using firstly the same ADSL account from WA. I also tried testing using an OpenWeb account. I ended up with basically zero packet loss (to last hop) and full connectivity to the mail server.
Before you ask I have an ongoing ticket with Afrihost and have spoken to their support staff but there seems to be no solution in sight.
Any advice will be highly appreciated as I would not like to have to move a number of GBs worth of IMAP mailboxes to another provider again.
