Currently have MSI GTX460, tried to replace it with a Gigabyte GTX660, but when I restart my PC there is no video output.

I've check that it properly connected on the motherboard. PCI Express 3 slot, which seems is what is compatable with the GTX660.

It's connected properly to the PSU.

Any ideas what is causing this?

Thanks

Does your CPU have integrated graphics?

Is it a brand new 660?

Did you take measures to ensure there was no ESD?

1st (and dumb) question, is your monitor properly connected to the DVI/HDMI port?

What PSU do you have?

Is it a brand new or used 660?

It was connected to the monitor via HDMI, both the monitor and the cable works when the GTX460 is plugged in.

It's a brand new card. It's the OC version with 3gig Ram.

I'll have to check my PSU. I replaced that about 2 months ago, not 100% sure about the specs.

Don't know what ESD is.

The motherboard has some sort of onboard graphics adaptor. I'ts got VGA & DVI out which also didn't work while my the 660 was plugged in.

Did you try connecting the monitor via DVI?

It could also be an issue with secure boot in BIOS.

I recently went from a PCI 2 to PCI 3 GPU and could not get past the bios, heck, couldn't get into the bios at all. Eventually I updated the motherboard firmware (which said nothing about updated support for PCI 3) and hey presto it worked.

Didn't have a lot of time last night. Will check on DVI when I get home.

Haven't touched any settings in the BIOS.

Will keep this in mind. How does on go about updating Motherboard firmware?

Would it be worth booting up installing the 660 drivers from CD before putting the 660 in?

Install old GPU. Download firmware, then install in whatever way your motherboard requires. For me that was loading it to a USB, restarting (with old GPU still) getting into bios and going from there.

And you're going from Nvidia to another Nvidia card so no need to scrub drivers or anything. Drivers are pretty much irrelevant until you hit Windows anyway. Had you been going between AMD and Nvidia it would have been a good idea to only uninstall the old drivers

Thanks for all the replies guys, got it sorted now. Seems that the HDMI output doesn't work properly before the drivers are loaded.

Connected it to the DVI and it booted up in 640x480. Installed drivers and now have one monitor on HDMI and the other on DVI. Just updating the drivers now.
