It means, that, the government probably shut this down because it was something they had no backdoor into.
The rumours that many ciphers have backdoors, appears to be fact, of late.

As I have said, true encryption, is that which is developed underground, and has not passed through government approval. Alas they will make it a criminal offence to possess/own/build such technology.

George Orwell's 1984 is truly upon us, albeit a bit late.

I'd disagree - the best encryption is an algorithm which is publicly available and can be verified by anyone.

Just because you can see how encryption works, does not mean it will be easy to write a decrypter. So having encryption developed underground, in my opinion, does not help.

It seems that TrueCrypt is all but dead

The general consensus is that the post on their page is a Warrant Canary
http://truecrypt.sourceforge.net/

What does this mean to the user? Does this mean some nsa dude is browsing my home video's as we speak?

Would it be possible for skilled persons to fork the project and maintain integrity?

The only type of home videos someone would crypt with Truecrypt are snuff videos or pedobear stuff. So I doubt they are viewing your home videos.

Interesting story though. RIP Truecrypt. Now somoene needs to fork it in a country like Iceland.

Well while my video's are neither of those, they are of a sensitive and precious nature to me (and more importantly to my wife) and the very connection between my body and my penis depends on their security. :D

There is some truth to that... peer review is important in encryption.
Many "top-secret" i.e. proprietary encryptions have been easy to break.

What I am saying is that, US government approved ones, i.e. standardized ones, are the ones to be wary of.

Yes, agreed.

This is why their advice to use bit locker seems to be a red herring.

Well, my encryption is to protect me from my data being used by criminals if the PC is stolen. SA crims wont be able to crack it, so all good. They can format the drive and move on.

Found an installer on my hdd should someone need it:
https://db.tt/LY2sp2Tt - 7.1a windows installer

SHA1 hash: 7689D038C76BD1DF695D295C026961E50E4A62EA

Edit:

lol - Someone on reddit pointed out the awkward phrasing - tinfoil edition.

WARNING: Using TrueCrypt is not secure as it may contain unfixed security issues

Glenn Greenwald's boyfriend must have been hoarding snuff and child pr0n then.

TC has been routinely used by jounos and their sources too.

Still using it and will continue to until something is discovered. All TC versions have their source code available to the public. Many prying eyes have been over this code and any security issues should have been discovered with over a year at their disposal.

That it hasn't been updated perhaps says something about its security. The last updates have mostly been minor improvements. What's more worrying for me is windows itself. If you want real security don't use virtual memory or any kind of suspend mode.

Im only seeing this now. Was going to re-install this after a format and move over to linux, but not so sure anymore. Does anyone have a suitable alternative? Or whats the latest news on TC?

PGP maybe.
