But seriously, the Spar has a small delicatessen section with single truffles in a small jar.
Normally about R120 or so per jar.

im sure the spars and checkers here keep it ..but never looked for it so didnt notice

It is delicious, but very strong. Only use a little bit. It is nice as a truffle aioli which you can use to dip things in.

That is right.
The reason why they are so expensive is that they grow only in certain parts of the world.
There are two main varieties white and black truffles.

Their strong flavor they are shaved raw onto pastas mostly, the smell and taste is like a strong, muddy mushroom flavor.
It is very difficult to describe but I really enjoy it.

The most cost effective way to experience is by truffle oil, still pricey but worth it.

Gnocchi, parmaham, artichokes and truffle oil.

I doubt it,synthetic chemical - thioether (2,4-dithiapentane) added to grapeseed or olive oil base (white truffle oil atleast)

In the Kalahari you can find the Kalaharituber pfeilii (or Terfezia pfeilii) and in Stilbaai they have found some native truffles but I think they are still unnamed.

Very few people actually like it.
Not so much because of it's cost but because of the very strong odor/taste.

Speaking of mushrooms we really have a schite selection in SA. Only see two choices on the shelves locally, button & brown. Dunno why they can't farm a local wild variety that tastes like manna from heaven.

Imports have made a wide variety available.
I can get at least 5 or more varieties at my local food lovers market.
