What does Control the internet mean?

The Obama Administration have agreed to privatise internet governance by giving the authority over domain-name system to a multi-stakeholder entity. Many Americans are actually against this move.

what is the pro's and cons? This is above my pay-grade

While the administration and its defenders have denied that the UN will have authority over ICANN, the Wall Street Journal‘s L. Gordon Crovitz points out that ICANN will need to be run by a state agency in order to retain its antitrust exemption, which makes it almost certainly that the UN will step in to take control.

Crovitz notes:

It’s shocking the administration admits it has no plan for how Icann retains its antitrust exemption. The reason Icann can operate the entire World Wide Web root zone is that it has the status of a legal monopolist, stemming from its contract with the Commerce Department that makes Icann an “instrumentality” of government.

Without the U.S. contract, Icann would seek to be overseen by another governmental group so as to keep its antitrust exemption. Authoritarian regimes have already proposed Icann become part of the U.N. to make it easier for them to censor the internet globally. So much for the Obama pledge that the U.S. would never be replaced by a “government-led or an inter-governmental organization solution.”

UN control would almost certainly allow tyrannical regimes some degree of control over Americans’ Internet use.

See where Trump opposes the plan.

Sorry you cant cite Breitbart as knowing anything....
These days WSJ as well

They are firmly on the Trump Train... Breitbart irrationally so.

Umm this may come as a surprise, but America doesn't control the internet. That's what's protecting the ineternet up till now.

But apparently America does control it. That's why I'm so confused

No the rest of the world only allows them to think they have some control over it. ICANN only has the authority which individual network operators allows them to have meaning they can take that authority away at any time. Network operators will do what's best for their clients which is ensuring an open and fair platform. They can even decide among themselves to start a new organisation and ditch ICANN. The real control is in allowing ICANN to manage it because it currently works.

It's Obama wants to surrender America's internet control.
What control? ICANN doesn't have that much control - it's more like coordination.
By keeping records of who uses what you avoid confusion. There is no technical way that you could stop people doing their own thing and keeping their own corner of the internet running. You just lose the global nature of the network.

That's my point but according to Obama they control the intent.
