Try this new funding model for universities: DA

I like the idea in principal, but I'm not confident that this will work. At some point the universities will have to choose wealthier students over poorer students in order to be able to run. This would just result in protests again.

Wealthier students deserve better education. Why can't people see this?

You're born into the situation you deserve to be in.
 
Merritt should be the only deciding factor. Not finances or race.

But soon someone will start burning universities because they're too dumb to qualify
 
I still say they should simply make a new "free" degree that covers a basic set of modules.

Then if you want to "specialise" outside of that you do the other modules at your own cost (or through sponsorship / bursary which you gain from performing in the free degree).

You enter the job market with a baseline education and it doesn't cost anything.


The model presented doesn't quite make sense as not all courses are the same or carry the same costs.

I suspect at the core of most of these protests are people who are failing or about to or simply can't cope. So this is a nice get out of jai free card for the time being.

Not really, because the same amount of fees would be collected whether a student is rich or poor. Poor students would be subsidised by government, whereas wealthier students would not.

A similar solution was proposed by the government, but was shot down. These guys want it to be free for everyone, including the "missing middle"...

If the university only chose the poorest students, it would require full government sponsorship for all students, which just isn't going to happen. This is an extreme case of course, but my point is that the amount of sponsorship required is going to change as a function of the wealth distribution of the students. There would have to be measures put in place to shape this distribution appropriately, which will ultimately result in protests.

Not according to the everything for free crowd.

If your parents or your family can't take care of you you have to take care of yourself.

Exactly. If you're born poor it's your problem. No matter how smart you are. That's pretty much what I said.

Well maybe if your lucky someone will recognise your talent or you can get a scholarship, but this is in exceptional circumstances and not the norm.
