A friend who has adsl is busy downloading easy peasy for me for my eeepc 701 4G.

Up to now I have been running Windows XP SP2, can't go to SP3 as the 4 GB HDD does not have enough free space :(

The final straw was today when I got 5 virusses in spite of having avira installed and fully updated.

Do I need any anti virus software for Linux? a n00b question, but one I have to ask though.

I mainly use the following apps at the moment:

Google Chrome or Firefox (cross platform) :)
Juice podcast receiver (cross platform) :)
Audacity (cross platform) :)
Open Office (cross platform) :)

I have upgraded my eeepc to 2 GB RAM, so I am hoping that it will run Linux well, or at least better than it did Windows XP.

I got a 30 day trial version of ESET, which cleaned the 5 infections, but it comes with a heavy price tag and it slows the machine down a bit too.

Any advice from seasoned linux users? Everyone says that Ubuntu is the best for newbies...

Just install Ubuntu Netbook Remix (UBR). There are AVR products like ClamAV to protect your windows buddies but the Windows Virii wont affect Linux.

+1 on all counts.

Linux virii are pretty much exploits of administrative rights, which means that the virus, assuming one of the handful of UNIX virii gets onto your computer, has to ask your permission to run it :D

Ubuntu Netbook Remix is pretty good. It's got a redesigned Gnome interface to utilise all available desktop space.

running easy peasy from my 4 GB flash stick, and I must say that it booted very quickly, came with a lot of software preinstalled and looks like a keeper ;

Ok cool, yeah then by all means please do. How much RAM, etc does it use on idle?

I have no idea how to check for that, sorry.

Ok, so I have audacity and a podcast receiver installed, taking baby steps :)

Having a few problems with vlc at the moment. and the wireless internet connection stays on even when I press Fn & F2, but for now at least I am able to use the netbook productively.

OK, so I have gnomesword installed now, although I would have preferred esword. when I feel more brave I will install wine and give it a try.

figured out how to enable & disable the built in wifi and usb cam :)

sound recording with audacity is tricky, the sound is rather soft and when I up the recording volume I get this nasty background hiss, and advice?
