It is interesting to read about the problems people have with ADSL.
I have problem with GETTING ADL.
I have contacted Telkom via phone, internet and in person and I keep getting these people the apologizes and promises action but NOTHING happens.
If this is an indication of the quality Telkom can deliver I don't think I'll bother with ADSL.

Cheers,

Hi

Do yourself a favor and rather wait until the problems get sorted out. Otherwise you will be waisting your time and your money.

Hope this helps

Time, money and breath...

I have been waiting since Wednesday to have a disconnect issue resolved!

It could take a while, we waited at least 3 months for ours.
Main reason was that they converted our line to a fibre-optic exchange, and had to dig up some old copper wire that they had left in and adapt it for ADSL. They had to test 3 times and change 2 faulty handware devices (no idea what) at the exchange and eventually got the line approved. (this is about 10 weeks down the line). So I was promised first week in July... Nothing... Second week... nothing, eventualy near the end of the second week I get a techie rocking up to install the line. Take a guess at what his first remarks were: "Sorry, you're on a fibre optic exchange, they have to see if they can put in copper lines...".
I gave him a piece of my mind about the whole story and assured him that the lines HAVE ALREADY been replaced, but he said nothing he could do till he checked the logs back at the department and would come out the following day.
Much to my supprise, this guy DID actaully cary out on his word and we had the line installed by the next day.
To cut a long story short, however, I think there's bugger-all communication between divisions/technical teams at Telkom, and nobody seems to check and/or have access to anyone else's reports or logs on a call.
The good new to those still waiting is that I've "heard" of cases (via the grapevine) that have been installed in about a week, but these are few and far between... More likely, be prepared for a wait!

Cheers, RiOT.

I waited for 8 months after the 'pilot' and were told that I live in a low priority area of Gauteng. (In not so 'politically correct' words, they deemed the area to 'poor' to install a so exspensive ADSL router in the local exchange)

I had to confront them on these terms (and not be very discreet about it either) before they allocated me a connection.

The service is fast should you decide to do what the 'wise telkom' decides is best for you - but please forget ADSL if you are interrested in streaming or PTP applications - you may not even do such outlandish things as chat with family using netmeeting.

I'm working on a proxy concept to get around this one - have to put my 20 years of network programming to some constructive use I suppose.

Cheers
