Trying to recover a file

I got a new system and forgot to backup a file that has personal significance to me. I've plugged the OS drive from my old system into an external freecom dock. Windows 8 sees it but the drive is unallocated and the only option I have is to create a "new simple volume". Any idea why I can't see the file structure...is it because it was a windows 7 OS drive?

Wondering if there's a way to get around this as I just need a quick fly through the file structure to find the file and grab it.

I suppose I could go with the formatting option and then use EASUS or something to try and recover the file.

Any advice?

This sometimes happens when you put an internal drive in an external housing and plug it in. I almost cried- thought I'd lost 2TB of blu-ray ISOs. You need to plug it in your motherboard then chkdsk should scan the disk for errors and fix it when you boot up.

Connect it directly to your MB via SATA, alternatively try a linux livecd

Format the drive you need the data from? No, that doesn't make any sense as you'll overwrite part of the index. If all of the above suggestions fail then any of the free, basic recovery tools will be able to easily give you a view of your data.
