To those who drive the Vw engines with TSI technology, how has been your experience in terms of maintenance and reliability.
I am looking into a Jette 1.4 Tsi 2016 with 60000km on the clock. Any problems I should anticipate.

I had a 2010 Golf 6 Tsi.. bought with 58k on the clock.. no issues until:

1. Chain was very noisy on a cold start.. Common issue with the TSi engine. Their cam tensioner tends to fail ( or wear out prematurely) this was around 70-80k on the clock when it started becoming noisy.

2. At 108k on the clock, car had extreme misfiring issues and starting problems. Turned out Piston nr1 has shrunk a bit causing loss of compression. --mechanic said to overhaul the engine at R40k minimum.

I traded in the car for something without a turbo.
Not sure how the newish TSi engines are like, but the old ones are very problematic.

2013 1.4 TSI with approx 110K km on the odometer.
No issues whatsoever. Oil consumption is 500ml per 15,000km

Use proper oil and look after the engine (allow car to warm up before flooring it and allow some time to cool off before switching off the engine.). Make sure the car you are looking at has a full service record

i guess something could be said a out the time you got the car, the technology was starting at this time. Do you think these issues were common or are still common?

Are you still under service plan and have you ever had to change the turbo?

Service plan has ended recently. No apart from consumables like oil filters and spark plugs nothing has been replaced on the engine. Turbo is also original

Just make sure your desired car didn’t have any problems during that 60k km. Shouldn’t have problems unless you drive like a muppet or take it to muppets to service.

My biggest concern really. I have no idea how ro search for info on this. I will check with VW on the history of service

Simple, ask the dealer to check if there were any warranty claims. If yes, run.

Thanks very helpful. You seem very knowledgeable. What would you get. Jetta 1.4 Tsi 60000km or Corolla 1.4 D4D 45000km both 2015

You know its all condition dependant.

The TSi could be very well looked after and the D4D hammered ( vice versa) . I would buy the car the was looked after like a baby.

Inspect the body and look out for any dents and scratches, then see if there were any paint jobs. Examine the interior and make sure everything is in top condition. This can guide you on how the previous owner maintained the car.

Most importantly, check on warranty claims.

Remember the dealer will swear on their mothers life to sell you anything. Just be careful.

Polo Gti 1.4 twincharged - piston 3 replaced at 70 000kms, and drank oil like you cant imagine (CAVE engine), but was "in spec". sold it at 95000kms

Audi 1 1.4 TSi - wouldnt start at 100 000kms. full on carbon buildup. Cost R3500 to clear it and was solved. Guy suggested selling the car as in another 20-30 000kms, the whole injection/intake system will need to be replaced. Other than that was fine.

Those twin charged engines were problematic. VW ditched them after only 3 years in production.

.

I never ever in my life heard of a piston that shrunk and make a cylinder loose compression. I think your mechanic took you for a ride. OE manufacturers use Hypereutectic piston that has more silicone to prevent expansion and contraction with heat and cool down cycles.

No way in hell a piston can will ever "shrunk"

That was my wording, maybe I did not understand the mechanic so well. Apologies for the confusion

As long as it's not the Turbo + Supercharged version (don't think the Jetta ever got those?) it will be fine.

It's the DSG you should rather worry about, especially if it's not the dry clutch version.

Totally. But in a world with mostly boring turbo's.... it had alot of character. supercharge spool, mini supercharge dump, then turbo. wish it wasnt so problematic, otherwise i would have kept it

as stated before, we have a combined 250 000kms on those getrag dry clutch boxes, not a single hickup. then again, it takes one failure out of warranty :P
