In fact, it is the other way round. Audi were already using 5 cylinder turbo motors in the early 80s, the ur-Quattro being the most memorable example. In fact, the 5 cylinder engine that you'll find in a garden variety VW Kombi taxi is a distant relative of that engine.

This is correct, Volvo bought the design way back from Audi and started using it and developed it further...
