After the leaks showed what it stands for, this could be the end for TTIP

The documents show that US corporations will be granted unprecedented powers over any new public health or safety regulations to be introduced in future. If any European government does dare to bring in laws to raise social or environmental standards, TTIP will grant US investors the right to sue for loss of profits

The European Commission slapped a 30-year ban on public access to the TTIP negotiating texts at the beginning of the talks in 2013, in the full knowledge that they would not be able to survive the outcry if people were given sight of the deal. In response, campaigners called for a ‘Dracula strategy’ against the agreement: expose the vampire to sunlight and it will die. Today the door has been flung open and the first rays of sunlight shone on TTIP. The EU negotiators will never be able to crawl back into the shadows again.

The leak of the TTIP text comes at a time when senior politicians across Europe have already begun to distance themselves from the increasingly toxic deal. President Hollande announced this weekend that France will veto any TTIP agreement that could endanger the country’s agricultural sector. Germany’s economy minister Sigmar Gabriel has also spoken publicly of TTIP collapsing, and has pointed the finger at US intransigence as the cause. When politicians start playing the blame game in this way, you know they are already preparing their exit strategies. The writing is on the wall.

For those of us in the thick of the EU referendum debate, the contempt shown by the TTIP negotiators to the people of Europe is the most potent reminder of the democratic deficit at the heart of the EU institutions. Today’s leak of the TTIP text leaves the leaders of the European Union with a choice. Either they abandon the TTIP negotiations immediately or they risk seeing the entire European project come crashing down about their ears. They have until 23rd June to decide

The texts include highly controversial subjects such as EU food safety standards, already known to be at risk from TTIP, as well as details of specific threats such as the US plan to end Europe’s ban on genetically modified foods.

This is a good thing. The ban on GMO's is based on fear mongering and ignorance... much like most of this article.

America gets European countries to come together form the EU then politely proceeds to threaten them into agreeing to whatever the USA wants all together because at this stage the EU (Recession) needs the USA (No Recession) more than the other way around

Why does food that has fed humans for thousands of years need to be modified? Just so that one country can take advantage of another stream to financial gain? If it's as you say a good thing why are negotiating in secret?

There's nothing wrong with the food that has fed humans for thousands of years, there is just not enough of it.
In order to sustain a population of more than 8 Billion people the world has to become more efficient at farming.
Bring in the scientifically advanced GMOs that can increase yields, fight pests and diseases that destroy crops, and grow under almost any conditions.
You do know you will be eating a lot more of this in SA soon...

African farmers to access drought resistant maize variety next year...

Without GMOs, SA maize yields ‘would be lower’...

actually, there is. most of it ends up in the bin "because its not pretty enough" or its leftovers people dont want to eat.
seeing as you post links, go find them yourself.

also, theres way too many people on this earth, so either a: no gmos so they can all die. or b: all gmos so they can all die.

why does the president of the greatest country EVAR's wife Michelle advocate eating organic? are you calling her an idiot? she Im sure has connections we dont have.

go do some research into how monoculture was grand for a while, and is now causing all sorts of havoc wrt nitrogen/fertilizer/pesticides etc

I don't need to do any research, it's already been done. ;)

Let's hope this does fall through.

Yes, I'm calling her an idiot.

The greatest ever didn't have a president.

FACT: There's no evidence that any GMO food is harmful.

FACT: There's no 100% proof that its safe either - but at this point it pretty much a given that it is.

FACT: There's plenty of evidence that roundup (Gycophosphate - prob spelt that wrong) is harmful to the environment and some (but not yet proven) evidence that its harmful to people.

The mistake is lumping all GMO's into a single category. We should definitely keep on making food thats more nutritious and more resistant to droughts / pests (as we have for 100's of years) wether in a lab or on the field.

GMO's that require less pesticides will in fact be more healthy as pesticides (while generally well tolerated) do put a small amount of stress on the system. Other GMO's for example add more Vitamin A to rice in areas where deficiencies are common and has has a proven beneficial effect on the there communities.

TTIP though want to take away the choice of Europe to be super careful about this and that is not right in my opinion.
