So im soing CompSci this year, so far its been a bit of an abortion. If you do the core subjects in english, you cant do physics in english too else theres a subject clash, despite physics being one of the 'compulsory' elective subjects. Illusion of choice? Well anyways, im gonna have to do some random module in afrikaans to avoid doing chem or bio. Why the offer bio, chem and geology in a CompSci degree is beyond me but anyway. Either way, I have tonight to sort my stuff out, and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the differences between "Statistics" and "Mathematical Statistics". I hear the latter is more theoretical and harder. Oh well, any takers?

Statistics is going to be a bitch either way. But if Math is your thing I'd go for Mathematical Statistics, it really goes well with AI if you're so inclined to do your Honors...

As for the subjects clash, it's a pity, but not a train smash. Physics in English is the same as Afrikaans because in the end it's the formulas that does the talking and walking... it's just math really. But if you have issues with the language then I'd suggest not to take your "compulsory" elective subject this year and maybe just do it next year when there's an open timeslot in english for you.

The reason why they offer bio, chem and geology with CompSci is because computers, believe it or not.... get ready to have your mind blown.... are also used in those fields ;) So having those subjects (and choosing them) gives you a nice overview of what you're able to do.

A friend of mine did her Phd in Dna or Microbiology or something, then did her CompSci I believe and now she's a sales person for a drug company for DNA machines and stuff and gives training on how to use them etc. You really need to know your stuff when you're "doing computers" in certain fields :D

Good luck, and remember. Varsity is about the partying, not the studying! Enjoy!

Awesome, cant wait :'(

I'm gonna do honours, the job market just suddenly looks so much friendlier :)

Is that even possible? The physics is absolutely insane, 4 lectures and a 2/3hr prac each weak for a side subject? Dunno if its viable to bunch it with everything else in 2nd year.

True that :). However, I did sign up to study computers, not spend the most of my time doing physics. I get the whole application part, but the ratio of workload is... disturbing. And then again, application is possible in just about any other field, why those specifically? 'Better' is really subjective here.

Good luck, and remember. Varsity is about the partying, not the studying! Enjoy!
Thanks :D I'm gonna try my best to keep a balance, getting a bursary in cash is veeery tempting prospect ;)

lol... well according to what I've heard, first year is usually the toughest. You scale down in classes every year AFAIK. Never been to varsity so can't really say if the reason for them scaling it down is because the other workload goes up or not.

But if you're not a dumbass then you should do fine, and I suspect that's the reason why students party so much...

Go ask your student advisor if it's possible to take the 1st year elective in physics next year only due to the conflict in times...

Phew it all got sorted out today. Im registered for all my modules. They said I must register for physics anyway, then rock up at the first class and tell them I have a problem. At least its pretty much everyone in my course doing physics that has the conflict, so they should make a plan some way or another. Thanks for the advice
