Tune will change if Max lied: Zille

Democratic Alliance leader Helen Zille said her measured stance towards allegations of philandering against Western Cape Community MEC Lennit Max would change dramatically if these turned out to be true.

Zille again rejected criticism by constitutional law expert Pierre de Vos that was hypocritical of her to call a reported torrid affair on Max's part a "private matter" but lambaste Zuma for fathering a child with the daughter of soccer tycoon Irvin Khoza.

In her weekly newsletter, she conceded many people had asked why she had been more critical of the president than the provincial police minister.

"The first reason that the Zuma and Max cases are entirely different is because there is a difference between a fact and an allegation... No-one is disputing the facts in the Jacob Zuma matter."

Contextual factors either aggravate or mitigate any kind of scandal. Without in any way condoning marital infidelity, it is clear that contextual factors are the reason why some 'affairs' make waves and other remain below the surface.

"And if it turns out that Lennit Max has been lying to me, his context will change dramatically."

Good to see Helen is taking a tough stance on morality within her own party. The DA is doing it's utmost (and yes there will always be rotten apples within a party of politicians, though Max may not be one of them) to maintain the high ground.

As long as they show the ANC how it is done, that is most important. However, I think the focus should be more on service delivery in the Western Cape than some tabloid smut. We've gauged the ANC by it's inability and corruption over the last 16 years, hopefully the DA will prove to be "untouchable" and deliver on it's promises.

yeah I heard her defending her stance on 702 the other night, and she had a really good point, when someone asked about the hypocrisy in her stance. She said that when someone makes an accusation, they need to be willing to have those facts scrutinized, which is not happening in this case. when someone runs to the tabloids and hides behind that, there are certain questions that need to raised about the authenticity of their allegations. She said that if the accusers were willing to lay the fact out, she would give them her full attention, but until that happens, it looks a little like a smear campaign
