Hi all:)

How do you turn off the auto update feature of Adobe Reader 8? Or at least make it ask you if you want to update first like the way it used to in earlier editions?

Thanks.

I think you can remove Adobe updater is something when you go to Add and remove programs. It's a seperate program as far as I know, not 100% sure though

Ja, I was wondering the same thing when I first got it, auto updaters are the first "feature" I turn off on any prgram and then they removed the option since Adobe 7 :O

I don't have any entry for it in Add Remove btw, only 1 for Acrobat.

Thanks.. but nothing happens when I try to check for updates :(

I'm sure it's just something on my PC though, might have blocked Adobe on my firewall as an alternative.

Open it....Help, Check for Updates. The resulting box contains a "Preferences' link where you can set your update requirements

It doesn't come up with any prefence links - just starts downloading. The only option you can set in a tick box is:"download only when my internet connection is idle".

Only Adobe Reader 8.0 in programs list no updater.

Edit:
I've solved my problem:D.

Delete the Adobe Update dll file from this folder:
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Reader 8.0\Reader\

After that it doesn't do any auto updates and the "Check for updates" option doesn't work either.

Hahah of course, I forgot about this sky.akash, I did that ages ago. :p

Thats why mine wouldn't start, well that's fine then.

Block it, the program, on the firewall.

I used to block a whole list of Microsoft IPs and so forth, but I don't have that list anymore, since I run Linux now.

I just blocked the Updater using AVG's Firewall. Did not even bother too set the updates off, or to even look for such a function.

Lol, if you can't handle the paranoia you shouldn't install pirated software ;)

What's pirated? I use the free Acrobat, all my other software is pirated. :D

Yep, I'm using the free version as well. I have never even seen the full version on any pc ever.

I use FoxIt Reader instead of Acrobat. Much smaller, faster and cleaner.

This is only about a 2Meg download.

There is also a portable pdf viewer (1.1MB) available on the portable apps site, though I haven't used it myself:)
