Cape Town - Anglican Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is back in hospital for treatment of a recurring infection, his family said on Wednesday night.

"He is expected to remain in hospital for a week or two," they said in a statement.

Tutu, 84, admitted himself to hospital. His family said he underwent similar treatment last year.

More information would be shared as it became available, his daughter Thandeka Tutu-Gxashe said.

Tutu was treated for a lengthy period last year for an infection.

Arch on the mend - Tutu family

Cape Town - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu is on the mend, his family said on Friday.

Following two days in hospital for a recurring infection, he had responded well to treatment, his daughter Thandeka Tutu-Gxashe said in a statement.

“After executive mayor of Cape Town Patricia de Lille popped in to wish him well on behalf of the citizens of Cape Town, the Archbishop expressed his deepest gratitude to all who had sent love and prayers since his admission to hospital on Wednesday,” the family said.

“He is being cared for by an amazing team of doctors, nurses and hospital staff, and was very conscious of how fortunate he was - thanks to the generosity of his medical team - to be able to receive first-class treatment not available to most South Africans.”

Tutu, 84, admitted himself to hospital. The family said on Wednesday he was expected to remain in hospital for a week or two.

In 2015 he also underwent treatment for an infection.

Tutu going in for surgery

Cape Town - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu will be going in for a minor surgical procedure on Wednesday to find out what is causing the infection that has been dogging him.

A statement from the Tutu family said that, in the meantime, "the Arch", as he is affectionately known, has continued to respond well to the treatment for the recurring infection.

Tutu took himself to hospital for treatment in August.Last year, the prostate cancer and tuberculosis survivor also had a lengthy hospital stay for an infection.The family of the 84-year-old anti-apartheid stalwart said they were grateful to all those holding him in their prayers.His wife, Leah Tutu, said more information on his condition would be shared when appropriate.

SA anxious on news of Tutu's surgical procedure

Cape Town - September 7 is a special day for Anglican Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu - and not just because a surgical procedure might tell his doctors why he keeps getting the infection that has been dogging him for the past few years.

It also marks 30 years since he became the Archbishop of the Anglican Church of the Province of Southern Africa - the first black person to hold the position.

According to SA History Online, more than 100 000 people gathered in his honour for the Eucharist held at the Goodwood Stadium.

Remembering the occasion in a church newsletter, the current Archbishop Thabo Makgopa said he visited Tutu at the weekend and found him in good spirits.

"Please keep him, Mrs Leah Tutu, and their family in your prayers," wrote Makgopa.

Tutu admitted himself to hospital last week after a recurring infection came back. "The Arch", as he is affectionately known, has beaten tuberculosis and prostate cancer in the past.


'Human sexuality'

Tutu officially retired in 1996, but has not slowed down, adding his voice to a wide range of pressing issues.

His youngest child, who followed in his footsteps to become the Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu, has forced the Anglican Church to re-examine its policy on same-sex relationships after it emerged that she could not preach anymore after she married a woman.

Following her marriage to Professor Marceline Tutu van Furth she had to give up her licence to preach.

As a result of the controversy, a motion was tabled by the Diocese of Saldanha Bay, proposing the provision of pastoral care for those who identified themselves as part of the LGBTI community.

"More controversially, the motion also proposes that clergy who identify as LGBTI and are in legal same-sex civil unions should be licenced to minister in our parishes," said Makgoba in March.

The discussion on "human sexuality" is expected to take place at a special church meeting.

Meanwhile, word on Tutu's condition after the surgery was eagerly awaited.

Bishop Desmond Tutu is no mere anti-Zionist (though Martin Luther King long ago recognized that anti- Zionism often serves as a cover for deeper anti-Jewish bigotry). He has minimized the suffering of those killed in the Holocaust. He has attacked the "Jewish"--not Israeli--"lobby" as too "powerful" and "scar[y]." He has invoked classic anti-Semitic stereotypes and tropes about Jewish "arrogance", "power" and money. He has characterized Jews a "peculiar people," and has accused "the Jews" of causing many of the world's problems. He once even accused the Jewish state of acting in an "unChristian" way.

Were he not a Nobel laureate, his long history of bigotry against the Jewish people would have landed him in the dustbin of history, along with a dishonor roll of otherwise successful people, whose reputations have been tainted by their anti-Semitism such as Henry Ford, Charles Lindbergh, Patrick Buchanan and Mel Gibson. But his Nobel Prize should not shield him from accountability for his long history of anti-Jewish bigotry, any more than it should for Yassir Arafat, Jimmy Carter and Jose Saramago.

Let the record speak for itself, so that history may judge Tutu on the basis of his own words—words that he has often repeated and that others repeat, because Tutu is a role model for so many people around the world. Here are some of Tutu's hateful words, most of them carefully documented in a recent petition by prominent South Africans to terminate him as a "patron" of the two South African Holocaust Centers, because he uses his status with these fine institutions as legitimization for his anti-Jewish rhetoric.

He has minimized the suffering of those murdered in the Holocaust by asserting that "the gas chambers" made for "a neater death" than did Apartheid. In other words, the Palestinians, who in his view are the victims of "Israeli Apartheid," have suffered more than the victims of the Nazi Holocaust. He has complained of "the Jewish Monopoly of the Holocaust," and has demanded that its victims must "forgive the Nazis for the Holocaust," while refusing to forgive the "Jewish people" for "persecute[ing] others."

Tutu back home after surgery

Cape Town - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu was back home on Wednesday morning after three weeks in a Cape Town hospital, his family said in a statement.

"Mrs Leah Tutu said she was overjoyed to welcome her husband home, and promised she'd be doing everything within her power to nurture him back to full health," the statement read.

Tutu admitted himself for a recurring infection and underwent a minor surgical procedure to find out what was causing it.

"The Arch", as he is affectionately known, has bounced back from tuberculosis as a child and prostate cancer in his later years.

While he was in hospital some Twitter users have kept vigil via a Tutu quotathon, with people posting their favourite quotes by him.

Controversial anti-gay US pastor Steven Anderson blogged on Tuesday that Tutu would be going to hell for speaking out against discrimination directed toward trans and gay people.

He also unleashed his anti-gay sentiments over Tutu's daughter Mpho's same-sex marriage to Marceline Van Furth recently.

Comment was not immediately available from the family on the latter topic. The Department of Home Affairs banned Anderson, who was due to visit SA, from entering the country earlier this week.

Tutu readmitted to hospital

Cape Town - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has been readmitted to a Cape Town hospital only a few days after being discharged following a surgery just over a week ago.

In a statement released on behalf of his wife Leah, Tutu was reportedly readmitted on Saturday as a precaution after his surgical wound had shown signs of infection.The Archbishop had undergone the surgical procedure 10 days ago, to address the cause of recurring infections resulting from the past treatment he had received for prostate cancer, the statement said.The family was very grateful for the ongoing prayers and support, Mrs Tutu said.

Love is the best medicine - Tutu thanks well-wishers

Cape Town - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu has thanked all his well-wishers for their messages of support during his prolonged stay in hospital.

"Thank you all you tweeters and facebookers for the love and prayers for my good health. Love is the best medicine. God bless you all!" Tutu tweeted on Monday.

His message comes after rumours of his "death" started circulating on social media earlier on Monday following a number of fake reports.

Family spokesperson Roger Friedman confirmed to News24 that the tweet was from Tutu.

Tutu was re-admitted to hospital on Saturday only a few days after being discharged following a surgery just over a week ago.

He was back in hospital as a precaution after his surgical wound had shown signs of infection, his wife Leah said in a statement.

A source close to the family told City Press that Leah and other family members were supporting the struggle icon and Nobel Peace Prize winner as he continued his recovery and that despite the health scare he was in good spirits.
