So I did a TV swap with a mate who recently got an upgrade - regretting it a bit now... here is why.

I had a Samsung 42in Plasma HD ready, and swapped it for a HiSense 42in Full HD

My Sammy was fine, there were just two things that bothered me:
1: It would get these pink patches when displaying big white areas.
2: The position in the hose meant that it was in the sun a lot and glare was a big problem. It also was very dark and struggled with night scenes.
3: Not Full HD - also not the biggest issue

The Hisence is a better TV in that its full HD and handles the glare really well. However there are a few really big problems.
1: The Remote does not work - Played with this a bit and it wont listen to my programmable PS3 remote either.
2: The TV tuner seems to be rubbish
3: Playing low quality Tv is a problem. The Plasma used to scale really well, even if it was dark.

The biggest issue is that I can't adjust the Sound without getting up and struggling with the buttons on the side of the TV.
My mate just used to use it for DSTV so wasn't really an issue for him, he just used the DSTV remote.
I unfortunately play most of my content from my PlayStation and also have a PSTV, WII and Steam Link.

So the first thing I thought of was getting a small HDMI amp/switcher that would let me have volume and imput switching.

The other thing... would probably get as well is entry level DSTV, just so I can get news channels and because I occasionally watch some of the local channels as well (Rugby, SABC 3 etc)

A part of me just wants to swap back, I think overall the viewing experience is better on the old TV, but the HD content its amazing on the new TV.

I don't really see a question here but you asked for advice, so my advice is why don't you first buy a cheap universal remote and see if you can get that to work.

+1. I use a Logitech Harmony for everything except HTPC and it made everything much easier (even the maid got the hang of it).

Go here and check if your devices are supported - https://support.myharmony.com/en-us/compatibility

I use Anymote for my TV and I'd recommend that if your phone has an IR blaster. I have a POS Sinotec and it does the job pretty well. There are some issues when I am in the menu but I think it's a problem with the TV and not the remote, as I have the same problem when I use the buttons on the side.

I resorted to the app because I use a Chromecast with my TV, so when I use it, I need my phone anyway. The remote was a waste of space and batteries.

I've a friend with a young child and her LED TV also became non-responsive to the remote so she asked me to look at it.

Went over there armed with fresh AA & AAA batteries suspecting the remote and found the main problem was sticky finger marks all over the TV. Not sure where the IR sensor was but a good clean all over with a damp rag dipped in Windolene followed by a polish with paper towelling did the trick.

Sounds like bad calibration.

Probably too much contrast.

Too late now though.

Playstation Remote is programmable? How? It's not even infrared. Only way it might work would be through HDMI-CEC via the PS3 but even that won't go very far beyond volume control and switching it on/off.

To test the current remote
Look at the remote ir lens with your phones camera . You should see it lit up via camera
