I have an LCD TV, DSTV decoder (non-PVR) and a DVD player with surround sound output.

Have figured out that to connect I:
a) run antenna feed into decoder
b) run R/W RCAs and Y picture RCA to DVD player
c) and finally a yellow RCA to the TV

Works as advertised... but my telly has USB input. So how the heck do I get sound down to the DVD player?

:whistle:
Thanks!

You need to clarify whether your DVD has aux in i.e can accept another video/audio source which I must admit for some reason doubt. I think you have a DVD player that can play to a set of 5.1 speakers.

If that is the case then your setup should look like this:

Antennae -> Decoder
Decoder -> Tv input 1 via red/white (audio) RCA and yellow (video) RCA
DVD -> yellow RCA to tv video input 2
DVD -> 5.1 speakers
DVD -> red/white RCA to tv audio input 2 (optional for playing DVD sound on tv)

Hi.

My DVD player has the three (y, r, w) AV In RCA ports, and one Monitor Out port (plus of course the Antenna plus speaker ports).

Thanks.

three (y, r, w) AV In

Component video. Are you sure these are inputs? Usually these HTIB units have component video out to connect to the TV.

one Monitor Out

This is probably composite video (if it looks like an RCA) otherwise s-video (if it has multiple small pins). Can use this as output if your TV doesn't have component input.

plus of course the Antenna

Surely this is for an FM antenna. I doubt a DVD/HTIB player has input for anything else.

Agree with stevenv. If it is component then my advice still stands except you would want to use the component out (red/blue/green) which is much better quality from the DVD player instead of the single yellow video out.

This question makes me think you want sound from the decoder to come out of the 5.1 speakers instead of the TV. You'll need to see if your HTIB has an audio inputs and if so, figure out how to switch inputs on the unit. Connect the audio outputs from the decoder to the audio inputs on the HTIB and you should get audio out the speakers. Remember though that it won't be true surround sound, speakers will all output at the "same" level and not have output from different channels on the original audio track. This is because RCA cables can't carry a surround track.

Is it possible to post a pic of your dvd's rear ? That'll give the problem solvers the information they need.

Even the make and model of the equipment you have will help!!

Thanks very much for all your help everyone!

The unit is an LG LH-T3632.
Can confirm 3 RCA input ports (currently had the three from decoder); and one RCA out (which, I assume, is the composite video stevenv refers to - definitely not s-video).

Okay, had a look at the manual for your unit. The three RCA inputs are not component video but rather stereo audio and composite video. So you will have to connect the audio out from the decoder to the top two audio inputs (left and right channels) and video out from decoder to the bottom one. Then connect the monitor out to the video in on your TV. Theoretically you should be able to leave the TV on video in and switch between DVD and AUX in on the HTIB to switch between DVD and DSTV. The antenna input on the HTIB is for FM reception.

Thanks Steven. If I understand your instructions correctly then this is what my current setup is. The trouble is that when I watch anything off the USB input (on the TV) then I only get sound from the TV itself (with the DVD player set to Aux).

By the way, did you find a manual online (have lost mine)?

Thanks. Much appreciated.

The manual is here. You'll need DejaVu viewer installed (no idea why there's no PDF version).

Unfortunately the chances of getting audio from the TV to the home theatre are low unless your TV has an audio output. If it does, you may want to change your setup and connect the decoder audio and video to the TV and then the audio output from the TV to the audio input on the HTIB. Then no matter what you're watching on the TV, the audio will play through the HTIB speakers. This will only work though with audio output on the TV and if the audio from USB files is routed to those outputs.
