Want to buy a new TV so i phoned the SABC Licence Dept to find out what my balance is. So that I can pay it up to date so that I can buy the TV. So phone them give them all the info they want and they tell me that i don't owe anything and that I only have to pay in 2013 again. So I thought they made a mistake and I phoned again just to make sure, and they confirmed that I don't owe any money. I then found out that I paid it in December and my wife paid in january. No wonder i'm money short in January. But at least now I don't have to worry for a while.

Good for you!

My surprise was the other way around - found out I owed them R1800!

You did the right thing :D

I haven't seen any TV license ads in a very, very long time...

SABC tell me my ID I used to pay licence fee does not belong to me, then in the next breath advise that I didn't pay my 2011 fee. Sent them proof of payment, then heard that the ID I have had since 1959 is invalid! So I called and explained it all, sent certified copy of ID. All ok now, so I thought. In Sep, had a letter from attorneys in Pretoria, so started explanation again. This week had a renewal request for 2012. Should I pay? All seems very muddled and SABC take 6 months to answer queries.

I had to get a TV licence 2 years ago so that I could get an LCD TV from game - which is used exclusively on the PC. It's never had an aerial or dstv connected to it.. I haven't watched a show on TV in over 2 years (the only time I ever even SEE tv is when I'm visiting someone).. but we still have to pay. sucks.

I recall seeing once that if you remove the tuner and get a certified letter stating so you can cancel the tv license, will be a mission though but will save some bucks

This is what I get from the website :

"The information you have requested is not available on the system. Please contact the SABC's TV Licence Customer Contact Centre on 011-330-9555 for assistance.
Business Hours

- Mon - Fri: 8:00 to 18:00
- SAT 8:00 - 13:00
(does not include public holidays)"

That's why I phoned them, because their site is useless.

I looked into this - I called them - and part of the deal is you gotta pay a call-out fee (I think it was R500+) for someone to come out and confirm that the tuner is removed. That combined with opening the TV (it has 3 years of warranty left) .. plus the hassle.. it's easier to just pay 250 a year to not bother lol.

Edit: I see on the link you posted that its R300, though I do remember them saying it was R500+ on the phone.

Then there's this:

"Should a licence holder thereafter require such exemption to be extended, written application by way of an affidavit confirming that the applicant still has no TV receiving equipment must be made on an annual basis three months before the end of each licence year."

Bleh, who has the time.

It's like once they have you in their system, its a lifelong annual responsibility on you to prove you don't need to pay them anymore?

Check the Broadcasting act, what the SABC tell you and what is required by law is often very different, especially regarding affidavits.

I'd be very careful of any portion of the law quoted by SABC or their lawyers as it often doesn't apply to individuals.

Q: How is a TV set “denatured” so that a TV licence is not required?

A: Removal of a television set’s "tuner" renders it incapable of receiving any TV signal and, consequently, exempt from the need to be licensed. Written notice to the SABC of such denaturing must be supported by documentary proof in the form of a letter/invoice/receipt from a reputable TV repairer or installer. A R300.00 payment must accompany such application to the SABC, after which an authorised agent will be despatched to inspect the applicant’s TV equipment.

On receipt of confirmation from the agent that the applicant has NO television receiving equipment [TV set(s), VCR(s) or PC(s) fitted with a tuner card] in his/her possession, he/she will be exempted from payment of licence fees for the rest of the current licensing period.

Should a licence holder thereafter require such exemption to be extended, written application by way of an affidavit confirming that the applicant still has no TV receiving equipment must be made on an annual basis three months before the end of each licence year. Should an authorised inspector visit an exempted licence holder’s premises and find that the receiving capability of his/her TV equipment has been restored, he/she becomes liable for payment of all applicable licence fees and penalties, plus a R300.00 inspection fee.

here it is

Tell them to get stuffed.. and if they keep harassing you, start sending them a bill for your time,.

stopped paying my licence 3 years ago - got a letter from their lawyers once, which I threw away and have never heard from them again - my next TV my GF will have to buy me....

Thats nothing, they want to lock up my dead mother for failing to pay her TV license for the past 3 years.

When I told em over the phone the women has passed away they said I must provide prove else they will come and arrest her. My response was to try there best and hanged up.

Still ignoring the letters, would love to see them try and take her ashes to court.

If I had know I would've never bought a tv at a normal shop. The auctioneers (who sell game stock) dont even ask for a tv licence..you just bid, win, pay & take your tv :)
