South Africa’s Twitterati are planning their revenge on Julius Malema after the ANC Youth League last week threatened to shut down the social networking site fake accounts in its leader’s name were not closed down.
The league is angry at people who have opened Twitter accounts using Malema’s name.
It reported that it was still waiting on Twitter administrators to respond to its request to close the fake accounts.
Eyewitness News has now counted at least 50 fake Malema accounts on the site. Popular local Twitter users are also planning a campaign to get users to change their profile pictures to ones showing Malema.
The youth league claimed those who create fake Malema accounts could be charged with fraud.
Internet expert Mike Stopforth said it might be difficult for Twitter’s operators to act.
“Twitter cannot shut down an account unless there’s a verified official account for that personality or brand that they can refer to.”
