Computer hackers are claiming victory after attacking Visa, Mastercard and PayPal for withdrawing services from WikiLeaks - and warn Twitter is their next target.

The group of web anarchists - AnonOps - have been waging a cyber war of revenge called Operation Payback.

It followed credit card companies and PayPal suspending payments to the whistleblowing website after it began releasing secret US diplomatic cables.

Their sites have been bombarded with overwhelming numbers of simultaneous, bogus visits - a tactic known as distributed denial of service (DDOS) attacks.

Activitsts urged people to "get your weapons ready" by downloading software from a link posted on Twitter. Supporters were then told to "FIRE FIRE FIRE!!!" at the agreed time to attack the websites.

We will find and will attack those who stand against WikiLeaks and we will support WikiLeaks in everything they need.

But it appears Twitter - previously a source of much WikiLeaks support - could now become a target.

The microblogging website suspended AnonOps' account last night and it has been accused of preventing the term "WikiLeaks" from appearing in its trending topics - a claim it has denied.

AnonOps has posted a statement on its website warning: "Twitter you're next for censoring WikiLeaks discussion."

A spokesman for Visa said it was "taking steps to restore the site to full operations".

The MasterCard website is now back online, although it is slow to load. The company said cardholders' payments are "secure".

In the attack on Visa, supporters were urged to 'get your weapons ready'

Other Operation Payback targets have included Swiss bank PostFinance, which froze money belonging to WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, who is in a London prison after being arrested over sex assault claims in Sweden.

In the US Tea Party figurehead Sarah Palin said her website and credit card details had also been hacked after she criticised Mr Assange.

"This is what happens when you exercise the First Amendment and speak against his sick, un-American espionage efforts," the former governor for Alaska told ABC News.

In a statement, AnonOps - which admits DDOS attack tactics - said: "We will find and will attack those who stand against WikiLeaks and we will support WikiLeaks in everything they need."

SKY

I see the Swedish prosecutors site was attacked too.

Suppose it was inevitable leftwing brat terrorism moved into cyberspace.

These attacks have been pitiful. Not really worth the effort and hardly anything to lose any sleep over. They are over almost as soon as they begin. Seems like Anon can't stay away from their WoW accounts long enough to sustain the attack.

The sacrifices one must make in the "war" against the corporate yank imperialists.....

From one of the Cablegate leaks:
United States - Visa and Mastercard beneficiaries of State Department lobbying effort

WikiLeaks Staff, 8 December 2010, 14.00 GMT

Visa and Mastercard both received lobbying support from the Department of State under President Obama, the latest Cablegate release reveals.

A cable from the Moscow embassy, dated 1st February 2010, details a new Russian card processing law which the embassy said would “disadvantage U.S businesses”, and urged senior US officials to take action. (click here).

“This draft law continues to disadvantage U.S. payment card market leaders Visa and MasterCard, whether they join the National Payment Card System or not,” it said.

Russia was considering whether to implement a new system of card payments (called NPCS), which would create a new payment processor run by Russia’s state banks. This would then handle all processing for domestic banking in the country.

“The fees for these services are estimated at Rb 120 billion ($4 billion) annually...the vast majority of Visa’s business in Russia is done with cards issued and used in Russia; with earnings from processing going to NPCS, Visa would no longer profit from these transactions.”

When discussing possible causes of the restrictive legislation, a senior Visa employee in the country told embassy officials he believed the move was due to Russian suspicions that Visa and Mastercard passed information to the US government.

“[Redacted] believes that, at least at the Deputy Minister level, MinFin’s hands are tied. Implying that Russian security services were behind this decision, [redacted] said, ‘There is some se-cret (government) order that no one has seen, but everyone has to abide by it." “As described reftel, credit card company and bank representatives have told us that GOR (government of Russia) officials apparently assume that US payment systems routinely share data associated with payment transactions by Russian cardholders with intelligence services in the US and elsewhere.”

The embassy’s economic officer, Matthias Mitman, concluded his cable by calling for action.

“While the draft legislation has yet to be submitted to the Duma and can still be amended, post will continue to raise our concerns with senior GOR officials,” he said.

“We recommend that senior USG officials also take advantage of meetings with their Russian counterparts, including through the Bilateral Presidential Commission, to press the GOR to change the draft text to ensure U.S. payment companies are not adversely affected.”

I agree - lock up the terrorists who staged the illegal denial of service attack on Wikileaks.

No just pay some prossies to service them free of charge that'll leave them impotent, excuse the pun

You guys are missing the point.

There is no way that Anon will bring down Mastercard, Visa or Paypal. That's not the point (although if they could, I bet they would).

The point is to raise awareness and to be honest, they've done a pretty good job of that. These attacks were all over the news all over the world.

Well done.

Ps. And this is not terrorism!

You don't like Twitter you say? You don't like that twitter is censoring your posts? huh?
WELL THEN FLIPPING USE ANOTHER SITE IDIOTS

This would be like

raising awareness by denying innocent bystanders access to the sites they want to use to conduct business and leisure?

Sounds like a FAIL strategy to me.

Ironic that Alan is concerned about Twitter being taken down too, after all it is the messageboard for all those left-wing, despot loving, dem lemmings celebs he so despises.

the Mentality of these 4Chan Fags are astounding.

- We don't want Paypal to Freeze the funds of 1 person, therefore we are trying to DDoS the shlt out of paypal, to Freeze the access of Millions of Accounts.
- We don't want Twitter to stop anyone from talking about something, so we want to come in and stop everyone from talking about anything.
- We don't want MasterCard to shut down one account, so we are going to try and shut down the site for everybody.

FAIL Strategy is an understatement.

Dude, if they catch wiff of this thread they're gonna come after this site next. Don't think RPM would like the hefty bandwidth bill if this local site gets a DOS attack.

EPIC Fail? :D

Fortunately as we have seen.... their effectiveness is no better than 80 year old grandpa Jones on a hot summer night when his 78 year old wife slips into that little sexy little number she keeps in the bottom drawer.

But hey he'd be just "collateral damage" in this just crusade for "transparency".....

Like I've said, everyone knows (including Anon) that there is NO WAY to bring down those big sites. It's all just to raise awareness.
