TV talk show queen Oprah Winfrey made her appearance on Twitter boosting the service’s uptake by 24% according to PCMAG.com who also laid out some interesting facts about user retention issues at Twitter. The site is growing, sure, but it isn’t really getting the same kind of retention figures that MySpace and Facebook got when they started out and managed to keep over time. The figures are so poor for Twitter that only 40% of new users actually return the next month. That does translate in growth, but it doesn’t really keep up with the 70% plus that Facebook attained. Analysts worry about the abandonment rate but I don’t think it is all that bad. I still don’t entirely understand the Twitter appeal quite yet but am feeding my army of seven followers whatever I can to get the hang of it and maybe get that “a-ha” feeling that I got with Facebook, which I absolutely love.

The nice thing about Twitter is the short amount of time you can spend updating it. Reading other tweets (other people’s status updates and thoughts) however can get time consuming but it is interesting none the less. Imogen Heap is certainly a weird one to follow but well worth it if I can give you a little tip. Whether or not Twitter will survive the test of time remains to be seen but I am still cautious with my opinion. If you forced me to give you a prediction under threat of being tickled, I would have to say it probably won’t, but I also have a strange feeling that there is plenty to come from Twitter still. All you need is one killer idea and the thing will rocket into place with the lead horses in no time. That is the thing, see, Twitter is not small at all, it is definitely a strong player with star appeal maybe because it is so small and easy to update. Not massive pages with loads of bells and whistles to load on a mobile phone. True, mobile Facebook isn’t a drag either, but people on the move tend to like the quick and easy stuff to communicate with tons of people. Maybe that is why I don’t have much of an appreciation for Twitter yet. I need a fan base and tour dates!
