Two robbers have been arrested after a police chase and shooting in Silverton, Pretoria, police said on Wednesday.

The driver sped off when police tried to stop their BMW X5 in Stormvoel road on Tuesday, ignoring stop signs and even driving into oncoming traffic, said Captain Jan Sepato.

When the police opened fire on them, the men jumped out of the car and tried to run away, but the police chased them and arrested them, he said.

Two unlicensed firearms and 12 rounds of ammunition were seized, Sepato said.

In the car, police found suspected stolen plasma television sets, laptops, an iPad, a camera and jewellery, he said.

They also found house-breaking tools such as a grinder, a screwdriver, and a bolt-cutter, and a bag containing cable ties and gloves.

Police later established that the car was reported stolen in Olifantsfontein in June, and were trying to determine whether the men could be linked to any other crimes.

Sepato said they would appear soon in the Pretoria Magistrate's Court.

Does anyone know where to call the policemen? We had a break-in in our factory a few weeks ago, which is very close to the area. This is just around the corner from my home.

The items stolen are similar, I would love to help the police on this.

They'll be from the Silverton station. So your best bet would be to go there.

I'm going there tomorrow morning. Our factory is in Rosslyn, the theft was reported about 1 month ago at Akasia station, they stole a grinder, saws, basic break in stuff. This just sounds to close to home to not suggest any suspicion.
