Durban - No arrests have been made in the wake of the fatal stabbing of a 19-year-old man at the Durban Day music festival on Sunday.

KwaZulu-Natal police have said the incident, which mired the popular event at the Moses Mabhida Stadium People's Park as it was coming to an end, was receiving their full attention.

It has emerged the Newlands East teenager had been chased by a group of men before being tackled and stabbed in the chest.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said the motive for the killing was not yet clear.

“A case of murder was opened at Durban Central SAPS for investigation,” he said.

Commotion

An event official, who spoke to News24 on condition of anonymity, said he had been searching for a lost child when he saw a commotion.

“We were all out looking for a girl who had gone missing and I saw [the deceased] throwing a bin at some guys and then running.

“They chased him down and tackled him and then throngs of people moved around them, so I didn’t see what happened. When everyone moved off I saw him lying there with blood all over the place and it looked like he was already dead,” he said.

East Coast Radio general manager Boni Mchunu said the radio station wanted to offer its condolences to the family.

"There is no easy way to accept the loss of a human life and I think we are both heartbroken and shocked at this incident,” she said.

Responding to social media speculation that there was overcrowding at the event, Mchunu said the venue was not overcrowded. The city and the safety officer determined the capacity of the People's Park and the organisers were guided by that. While the capacity was 18 000, ticket sales had been capped at 16 500.

“A lot of people are involved in an event of this size. This is why we involved the city, safety officers, who’ve worked on some of the big events in the country, and our team. We are obsessive about safety from a resource point of view; everything was taken care of,” Mchunu said.

Durban - Police have made a breakthrough with the arrest of two men and the recovery of a knife they believe was used to stab Montreal King at the Durban Day Festival at People’s Park on Sunday night.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker confirmed two "suspects" had been detained.

"Two men have been arrested and we have recovered the murder weapon," he said.

The crime mired the popular event as it was coming to a close.

It has emerged King, from Newlands East, had been chased by a group of men before he was tackled and stabbed in the chest.

Naicker had earlier said the motive for the killing was not yet clear.

"A case of murder was opened at Durban Central SAPS for investigation," he said.

Crisis Medical spokesperson Kyle van Reenen said paramedics had worked fervently to save King’s life, but their efforts had been in vain.

"On examination by our team it was found the man was unresponsive and in a state of cardiac arrest. Advanced Life Support was administered and cardiopulmonary resuscitation [CPR] started. After an hour long exhaustive effort by our team, the man was sadly declared deceased on scene," he said.

"On behalf of Crisis Medical, I would like to express our sincere condolences to both the family and friends of the deceased," he said.

New details emerge in Durban Day slaying

Durban - New details surrounding the fatal stabbing of Montreal King at the Durban Day Festival at People’s Park on Sunday have emerged, following the arrest of two people.

Police on Monday confirmed that they had detained two people and recovered what they say is the murder weapon that inflicted the fatal wound to King’s chest on Sunday night.

Police spokesperson Colonel Jay Naicker said a thorough investigation had been conducted.

“Two suspects aged 18 and 19 were arrested and detained at the Durban Central police station. They will be charged for murder and attempted murder. They are expected to appear in the Durban Magistrate's Court soon,” Naicker said.

Naicker revealed allegations levelled against the two suspects which shed light on what may have happened in the moments before a blade was plunged into King’s chest.

“It is alleged that in the evening, there was an altercation between two groups of men from the Wentworth and Newlands East area within the park. These groups were allegedly insulting each other when one of the men stabbed the victim in the chest,” he said.

After stabbing King, the suspect dropped the knife and fled whilst his friend kicked the victim, said the police spokesperson.

Security guards immediately intervened and removed the two groups from the park. Paramedics arrived but were unable to resuscitate the victim and he died at the scene.

Naicker said a friend of King’s was also stabbed on the hand by one of the suspects.

“A third victim is believed to be admitted in hospital and the circumstances around his stabbing [are] part of a police investigation,” Naicker added.

Durban Day stabbing: Mom forgives killers

Durban - When a mother first heard her son had been stabbed at the Durban Day concert on Sunday evening at People’s Park, she “thought he was going to be fine”.

Charmaine King said she immediately set out to fetch her wounded son, Montreal King, 19, to take him to hospital.

But it was not to be - she was on her way to People’s Park when she received the news he had died.

But the mother told the Daily News in an interview at her Newlands East home on Monday she had found it in her heart to forgive her son’s killers.

She was speaking just before police announced they had arrested two suspects, who have been charged with murder and attempted murder.

The young man died in full view of revellers at the concert, at about 7.30pm.

King said her family was in shock and two of Montreal’s friends had to be taken to hospital by their parents because of the emotional trauma.

King, who works with unemployed mothers in Newlands East by helping them grow vegetables, described Montreal as a “chatterbox”.

Teens charged with Durban Day murder have to wait for bail hearing

Durban - The bail hearing of two teenagers charged with murdering a man at the annual Durban Day event on Sunday, will be heard on September 17.
The two were arrested on Monday in a police swoop that saw officers recover what they believed was the murder weapon used to stab Montreal King in the chest.

King, from Newlands East, was stabbed after an altercation with other youths and despite the best efforts of paramedics to revive him, died at the scene.

On Wednesday, families of the accused, aged 18 and 19 respectively, were at court to support them, but the victim's family did not attend.

Tristan Augustus and Radley Warner, appearing before mMagistrate Vanitha Armu in the Durban Magistrate's Court, are charged with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder.

Radley attends Umbilo FET college, while Augustus attends Fairway Secondary School.

Armu denied a request to take pictures of the accused, as an identity parade must still be held.

Family members in court firmly shouted "no" when they heard the request for photos.
The state has indicated that at this point, evidence included reports by eyewitnesses.

Warner's attorney, Ridewaan Sayed, has called for the next appearance to be the bail application, saying Warner was a Grade 11 pupil who would be writing quarterly exams soon.

Both the accused would be held at Durban Central holding cells until their next appearance.

Durban Day accused involved in another stabbing

Durban - One of the two men accused of stabbing Montreal King to death was suspended from his school last year for another stabbing, but his victim was too afraid to press charges, the Durban Magistrate’s Court was told on Thursday.

Testifying in the bail application of Tristan Augustus and Radley Warner, investigating officer Constable Nazareen Govender said: “The victim told us he was too scared to open a case.”

She said Augustus had been suspended from school over the stabbing incident.

Augustus along with Radley Warner face charges of murder and attempted murder in relation to the September 6 fatal stabbing of King at the Durban Day concert staged at People’s Park near the iconic Moses Mabhida stadium.

The pair are seeking to be released on bail, but the state has opposed the application, saying that not only did they have concerns that the two would interfere with witnesses, but that their safety was at risk.

Govender said Augustus had received threats to his life. One threat posted on Facebook described Augustus as “Dead Man Walking”.

She said that one of the witnesses in her case had also been threatened.

Govender explained that many of the witnesses went to the same school as Augustus and some even belonged to the same gang — the Ogle Road Glamour Boys, or more commonly known as the OGB Gang.

Durban Day murder accused out on bail

Durban - Two Wentworth teenagers, accused of the fatal stabbing of Montreal King at the Durban Day music festival two weeks ago, have been released on R3 000 bail.

Tristan Augustus, 18, and Radley Warner, 19, have been charged with murder and attempted murder, and were detained in the days following King’s death.

During the pair’s formal bail application in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Thursday, the court heard argument from the state attorney who opposed their release.

It emerged that Warner had a previous conviction for assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, for stabbing another man with a broken bottle.

Similarly Augustus, who is a Grade 11 pupil at Fairvale Secondary School, had also been charged with assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, but the charges were later withdrawn.

Investigating officer Constable Nazareen Govender gave evidence in the application, insisting that the team had secured statements from six witnesses to the stabbing, who allegedly saw Augustus stabbing King in the chest after a verbal exchange.

Warner is accused of kicking King in the head repeatedly after he had collapsed.

Govender further testified that five days prior to the Durban Day incident, Augustus had allegedly stabbed another learner at his school and that it was caught on video.

Attorneys representing the pair said that both intended pleading not guilty to the charges, and would see the trial through to the end and had no intention of evading it.

Ridewaan Sayed, representing Augustus, put forward that the video did not show his client and that no case had been registered for the stabbing.

Magistrate Vanitha Armu granted them bail of R3 000 each.

Another Durban Day stabbing trial

In the latest incident before the courts, the 17-year-old’s attorney, Christopher Yellayah, said there was apparently an ongoing feud between two groups that allegedly resulted in many other fights that day that were not reported to the police.

“Our client says he was chased down by this group and went to report the matter to the police and was told they did not have any complaints in the matter and he should go. It was only when the complainant went to the police that he (the Bluff teen) was arrested.”

Suspect in fatal Durban Day stabbing acquitted

Durban - Poor witness statements on Thursday led to the acquittal, in the Durban Regional Court, of the man accused of stabbing 20-year-old Montreal King at the East Coast Radio Durban Day in September 2015.

It was alleged that King, from Newlands East, and the accused, 22-year-old Wentworth resident Tristan Augustus, had an altercation at the event held at the People’s Park, Moses Mabhida Stadium.

Magistrate G Cele said Augustus pleaded not guilty to murder but admitted to stabbing King in self-defence.
