Two dead in KZN diving accident

Technically anything sub 5 meters has a risk of DCI (which includes DCS) due to the big initial pressure difference between 1ata(surface) and 2ata(10 meters) - double

It's one of the big motivators for a 3minute safety stop at 5m after any dive - prevent microbubble formulation

Just to add:

You can free dive as deep as you want. It's only when you used gas bottles that you have the risk of DCS.

Yes didn't think to mention that due to this being scuba discussion but correct,due to compressed air being breathed by scuba divers (free divers have a set gas supply that cannot expand beyond its original volume)

My Wife had her inflator fail too,within 2 seconds she had both her manual dumps open and I disconnected the LPI hose. Unless all the dumps fail you shouldnt pop to the surface ever when you have your wits about you

BC wouldnt dump at all. We disconnected the inflator and he continued the dive with use of the bc.
 
does this include re-breathers as well?

Yes,it does mitigate the risk to a degree by providing your breathing gas mix at the highest safe partial pressure of O2 at any given depth (the DCS is caused by Nitrogen gas so lower Nitrogen intake = lower DCS chance for the same dive time and depth with the same diver)

Most BCs have multiple redundant dumps,many divers dont bother learning where the pull dumps are situated though

I find it hard to imagine 2-3 spring-loaded pull dumps all failing :P
