two ISP's on one ADSL line

Hi,

My landlord has Skyrove with a 24 month contract on a Telkom ADSL line, they pay for the Telkom ADSL line plus 1 gig of data.

I want to get MWEB uncapped ADSL, is it possible to use the same line & not use the Skyrove (but still continue paying for Skyrove). In other words we run the ADSL modem through another wifi router instead of the skyrove wifi router.

My proposal to them would be that I would pay for the MWEB uncapped per month, while they continue paying for the Skyrove (1 gig of data) + the Telkom line. In other words they still pay the same (thereby honouring the Skyrove contract), and they still have internet, the only difference is that it is uncapped. The advantage for me is I dont have to get Telkom to come install a second telephone line (which I dont need), plus I dont have to pay for the ADSL line rental. I pay for the uncapped MWEB + get uncapped internet. The only downside is that I now share the internet connection with them (pppoe over wifi), in other words it will be slightly slower if we both use it at the same time.

Do any of you know if it is possible?

PS when I move out they can just plug the Skyrove wifi router back in + continue using that.

If they have a seperate adsl model (like a Linksys ADSL2MUE) and run the skyrove stuff on a wireless access point (like Linksys WRT54GL) then you can put a switch in between the 2, and then connect your own access point to that switch. This way both the skyrove router and yours can dial PPPoE connections (going through the network and the adsl modem). When you connect your laptop/desktop to your router you would be using your mweb and when they connect to the skyrove router they will be using that...
 
You can run two accounts on one line using software such as route sentry.

My advice.... you should both share the Mweb uncapped account and leave the Skyrove account dormant. At the end of the Skyrove contract, if he wishes to extend or cancel, that is his choice.
 
just say stuff the 1 gig and let them all use the mweb link ? keep paying the contract but don't use the 1 gig ?

yes, I also thought it would be easiest to let them use the uncapped Mweb & just let Skyrove lie dormant, I just wanted to know whether it is possible, but it does seem so!

Just remember, firstly the application sits on your PC, not on the router. Also, applications such as route sentry are really only used for routing traffic. For example, you have one ISP for international bandwidth and another for local only. So when playing a game on a local server, Route sentry will use the local bandwidth from the local ISP. For the guys that don't have uncapped accounts, this is a sneaky way to save money.

I personally haven't used it for what you're suggesting, but with an uncapped account, the 1GB from Skyrove is kinda irrelevant :-)

Skyrove would typically provide your landlord with a contract that includes a discounted line rental and in some cases the equipment.

This is so that Skyrove can ensure the best quality service to anyone using the Wi-Fi hotspot.

Besides for what you suggest being a breach of contract and being pretty unethical, you'll have the effect of causing a slowdown for all other people who are using the Wi-Fi hotspot and paying for it on a prepaid, per megabyte basis (typically 30c, so much cheaper than 3G, but no special dongle needed). And I suspect as you'll be using Uncapped, you're not exactly going to be "friendly" about controlling your own bandwidth usage and will be flooding the service entirely.

I started Skyrove so that people could share internet with their neighbours/guests/tenants in order to bring down the cost of internet access. For the vast majority of people, it's much cheaper to use Skyrove than getting their own line rental, their own modem and their own ISP account.

Haven't heard of skyrove before so wasn't sure what it was all about but come on 1 gig ?
 
I have 4 ISP's on one line. It is possible. With a normal Telkom Mega100WR pile of rubbish modem.

Had Screamer and Digichili

Now got Afrihost and SAINET

My sister also has MWEB on the same line and we also havea telkom account for work purposes, and it works fine if im on with SAINET, she's on with MWEB and one other person with Telkom all at the same time.
 
I see the new netgear wireless routers from telkom are able to make 2 pppoe connections at the same time. Was a normal DG834GUK 54MB wireless router but with different firmware.
 
Yeah, the billion modems from Telkom can also handle multiple accounts, 4 or 5 I believe. I don't feel like plugging in my LAN cable to check, but it is at least 4.
 
There are two very big problems:
1) As henkk78 said you might degrade the performance of skyrove users. And he is correct.
2) Sharing the connection with the whole world probably falls outside MWeb's definition of fair use.

Set up dual connections, route skyrove users over the skyrove connection, yours over the uncapped connection. Set up rules to de-prioritize your traffic so that SkyRove customers get priority treatment.

But in all honestly - you can't have your cake and eat it too. This scenario is WAY too complex already, and if I were the owner of the line I would just reject the proposal outright. Just too much headache.

I can also say ... now is not the time for rash decisions. The ISP market is changing rapidly, and whatever Telkom will announce in terms of pricing updates in April can change things in a blink of an eye.
