Two men drowned on the KwaZulu-Natal coast on Thursday, one in Margate and the other in Amanzimtoti, paramedics said.
In Margate a man jumped from a pier, Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said.
"Paramedics arrived at the scene and were informed that the man in his 30s had jumped from the pier into the sea and soon disappeared under the water," he said.
The police search and rescue unit would investigate.
In Amanzimtoti a man in his late 30s drowned at the Pipeline Pool on the beachfront.
"A report from the scene indicates that the man was swimming in the pool and for unknown reasons disappeared under the water."
Lifeguards tried to resuscitate him, but he died on the scene.
In Hibberdene two men were in a serious condition after nearly drowning. They tried to help other people in difficulty in the water, and got into trouble themselves. Lifeguards saved them and they were taken to hospital.
