Here's the situation:

My brother has been having issues with his phone in that he will not get SMS and sometimes calls won't go through... Now today I sent him an SMS, and I get a reply, but he did not send the reply. The same thing has happened with other people.

Now this is a contract number thats been ported. I think someone else is using the same number as him.

Some help will be greatly appreciated.

Same here.
Have a mtn contract phone (not ported)
But I get lots of calls and sms's, even absa payment\transaction sms's for another person.

Not quite the same, but the (Telkom) number at the shop is 021-797XXXX and a local hospital is 021-799XXXX, the XXXX is exactly the same. At least 10-12 calls a day asking for hospital info, patient info. One day last summer lady calls at least 7 times about her uncle Albert, is he ok, is he awake, can we give him a message. Would not believe she had misdialed and got quite rude. At the last call, I picked up and there is the same lady, so I said "I'm terribly sorry, he passed away half an hour ago". That sorted that one

Pooky is describing something that sounds like a home location register doing exactly what it should if two devices on the network claim to have the same number... listening only to the most recent announce (saying this under correction and without fully understanding the underlaying methods/tech). What you are describing sounds like a simple someone that gave up his number wrong or even a recycled number. How long have you had the number?

For about 8 months, my parents, when the phone rang, would pick it up and hear two ladies having a chat. They could all talk at once, but they found out that one of the other people's number was different from theirs, although on the same exchange.

Telkom (in those days the Post Office) said it could not happen, then one day it stopped

When I call his number, his phone rings, when I sms'd earlier, he didn't get the SMS, but I got a reply from someone else.

His other friends have experienced the same thing.

if its a ported number just ask your service provider to update the routing of your number. Call MTN porting on 083 123 7667 to have them update the routing. So even if the other person is using the same number all the sms and call will come to your number.

The problem with ported number sometimes is if you port out, the network you port out needs to disable your number. They DON'T always do that due a system fault or something and then the number gets recycled and some random person that activates a new contract or prepaid staterpack gets allocated that number.

Happens today still. Just picked my line and can hear two folks having a chat if I listen really carefully. Tends to be worse on rainy days so my first guess would be improper insulation somewhere between here and the exchange. If it was a bit worse they would've called it crossed lines in the old days.

Thank you, I will try this.

More than two years now.
I used to reply to the sms's hahahahaha, all kinds of funny comments, but I just delete them now.

This is how cloned sims result in your bank account being cleaned out. Be careful folks.
