Two slots next to the PCI-E slot?

Hi

I was just looking at a motherboard in a catalog...

There are two little slots for something.. in which I do not know what it is..

Don't know what it's called..

So just want to ask..

Silly post - we cannot see the catalog picture of the motherboard.

Maybe posting the make and model of the motherboard might be useful.
Or better yet a picture or a link to a picture.

Its like saying "I saw a picture of a car in a catalog and what do you think of the color ?"

The big slot you are referring to as a PCI-E slot is actually a PCI-E x16 slot. This means that it has 16 times the bandwidth of a normal PCI-E slot available for use. The tiny slots next to it are also PCI-E, but only x1. Normal PCI slots are about as long as a PCI-E x16 slot.

This pic shows the difference quite clearly. From top to bottom - PCI-E x4, PCI-E x16, PCI-E x1, standard PCI.

Perhaps you should post a picture or a link?

BTW, there are these two trees growing outside my window, they're tall and have green leaves. Any idea what they could be?

I want to find out.. But I dont' know what it is called.. Thats why I need to ask ..

Well I did tell you where it is..

It's a slot LIKE the PIC and PCI-E slots.. Same colour.. And it's small.. Like a little chip can fit in there.. I think ALL new motherboards have that..

I'm talking about the 3rd little slot from the top..

What is that used for?
 
Basically the same use as PCI, but faster. Manufacturers of add-on cards use that when they don't need very high speed connections like your graphics card needs. Digital TV tuners and sound cards come to mind. You can basically decide which version of an add-on card you want if your motherboard has both kinds of slots. PCI is slowly being replaced by PCI-E x1, though.
